This article explores how myth, mysticism, and Irish nationalism intersect in three of W.B. Yeats’s famous poems: “The Second Coming” (1919), “Easter, 1916” (1916), and “Sailing to Byzantium” (1927). Yeats’ poetry represents a lifetime battle to reconcile the brutal reality of his time with his personal vision of order, art, and spiritual transcendence. Yeats wrote during a time of great political and cultural upheaval in Ireland. This essay contends that Yeats used myth as a framework for comprehending and analysing history rather than as a way to escape it. In “The Second Coming,” he uses a Christian apocalyptic perspective to create a horrifying picture of historical collapse. In “Easter, 1916,” he turns a political setback into a heart-breaking celebration of valiant sacrifice. In “Sailing to Byzantium,” he completely abandons politics in favour of the ageless realm of art. When taken as a whole, these poems show Yeats’s developing answer to the dilemma of how a person might find purpose in a shattered world. According to the article’s conclusion, Yeats’s brilliance is found in his refusal to provide simple solutions; instead, he gives us the dignity of the fight itself.
