This paper re-reads Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe (1719) and W.B. Yeats’s “The Stolen Child” (1886) through the lens of adoption studies. Although the two works belong to different literary genres, both depict vulnerable subjects being separated from their birth country/culture/family and relocated into an adoptive country/culture/family. By offering an interdisciplinary reading of these two texts by integrating the debates of portraying transnational adoption as humanitarian rescue and commodifying children, this study strives to bring literary studies into dialogue with adoption studies.
