This article aims to examine the dreams and visions in Yeats’s poetry. Their Importance of the dreams and visions lie in their potential to inspire poetry. Several of Yeats’s poems use images from dreams or visions and speakers who are not just observers but seers. “The Second Coming,” for instance, shows the narrator who observes images of violence unfolding before him and realizes that the images came to him as a vision, or a revelation. Another poem, “The Cap and Bells,” was directly inspired by dreams. This essay, therefore, attempts to explore how Yeats’ lifelong interest in visions and dreams served as inspirations for his poetry through discussions on three of his poems: “Towards Break of Day,” “The Cap and Bells” and “The Second Coming” after a brief survey of the literature on visions and dreams that had formative influence on Yeats.

본 논문의 목적은 예이츠의 시에 나타난 꿈과 비전에 대해 살펴보는 데 있다. 꿈과 비전이 가진 중요성은 이 두 가지 요소가 시적인 영감의 원천이 될 수 있다는 것에 있다. 예이츠의 시에서는 꿈과 비전에서 유래한 이미지를 종종 볼 수 있으며, 단순한 관찰자가 아닌 예언자로서의 화자가 등장한다. 가령, “The Second Coming”에서 눈앞에서 펼쳐지는 폭력적인 이미지를 관찰하던 화자는 곧 이것이 하나의 비전이며 계시임을 깨닫게 된다. 다른 시, “The Cap and Bells”는 꿈에서 직접적인 영감을 받은 작품이다. 그러한 점에서 이 글은 우선 예이츠에게 영향을 주었던 비전과 꿈에 대한 논의를 간략하게 살펴본 후, “Towards Break of Day,” “The Cap and Bells”와 “The Second Coming”을 중심으로 평생에 걸친 예이츠의 비전과 꿈에 대한 관심이 어떻게 시에 대한 영감을 주었는지 논의할 것이다.
