It is well known that Yeats was influenced by the Romantic poet and dramatist Lord Byron, having been fascinated by his dramatic poem Manfred. Yeats’s Cuchulain and Byron’s Manfred are intensely tortured by remorse in their inner lives, and the way they handle their own deaths sheds light upon their creators’ artistic philosophies. The ways in which each hero copes with the weight of true knowledge and confronts death are particularly comparable. Looking at the Yeatsian portrayal of Cuchulain in On Baile’s Strand and The Death of Cuchulain, as well as Byron’s depiction of Manfred in Manfred, this paper discusses the heroes’ similarities and differences in language, temperament, and psychology under distinct dramatic conditions.

예이츠가 낭만주의 시인이자 극작가인 바이런 경의 영향을 받았으며, 특히 그의 희곡 『맨프레드』에 매료되었다는 것은 잘 알려진 사실이다. 예이츠의 쿠훌린과 바이런의 만프레드는 내면에서 극심한 죄책감에 시달리며, 그들이 죽음을 대하는 방식은 창작자들의 예술적 철학을 드러낸다. 특히 진실을 알게 된 무게에 대처하고 죽음에 맞서는 방식은 두 주인공에게 있어 매우 비교할 만하다. 본 논문은 예이츠의 극베일리스 스트랜드에서 와 쿠훌린의 죽음 에 나타난 쿠훌린의 모습, 그리고 바이런의 극 만프레드 에 나타난 만프레드의 모습을 살펴보고, 각기 다른 극적 상황 속에서 두 영웅의 언어, 기질, 심리적 유사점과 차이점을 논의한다.
