To understand how Western literature and art shaped the artistic work of Isao Takahata, a master director at Studio Ghibli, this study examines three interrelated aspects: his affinity for French culture, his direction of the World Masterpiece Theater series adapted from Western children’s literature, and his exchange with the Canadian master Frédéric Back. As a director, Takahata drew on the French intellectual tradition to which he was deeply attracted, as well as on a profound commitment to artistic integrity. Alongside filmmaking, he pursued critical writing that crossed conventional generic boundaries and regarded animation as a comprehensive art form. His early adaptations of a wide range of Western novels helped shape his realist style and led him beyond a vague admiration of the West toward an exploration of the beauty of Japan. This development was also enabled by his encounter with the work of Frédéric Back, who translated a philosophy of life and an aesthetic sensibility into a profound sense of place ‒ an approach that proved indispensable to Takahata’s growth. An in-depth examination of Takahata’s art requires setting aside the conventional categories of “a Ghibli director” and “a representative of Japanese popular culture.” Instead, it calls for attention to the way he assimilated Western literary and aesthetic traditions as the foundation of his own work and continually reworked them through an ongoing dialectical process.
