In the age of AI translation, this study presents and evaluates a course model for the “Japanese Literary Translation Practicum,” designed to strengthen learners’ hermeneutic agency and critical competence. The practicum, conducted in spring 2026 with 22 undergraduates, used texts embodying ‘robot-ness’ in multilayered forms: sixteen short-short stories by Hoshi Shinichi and one AI-generated story. Through a ‘three-way parallel comparison’ of originals, published translations, and AI translations, learners diagnosed the strengths and limitations of machine translation and performed independent post-editing. Analysis of the ‘ending twist,’ assigned to every presenter, guided learners to critically examine AI translation’s lack of macro-level control. Qualitative analysis showed learner performance branching into three types: the ‘completed type,’ carrying interpretation through to critical judgment; the ‘proximate type,’ grasping the twist but withholding critical judgment; and the ‘fragmented type,’ failing to structure the twist analytically and misreading the source text, thereby visualizing the competence gap between interpretation and judgment. Split presentations of a single work further showed the same source text yielding divergent renderings according to each learner’s interpretive orientation, while 90.9% of survey respondents recognized the human translator’s responsibility as the final gatekeeper. These findings suggest that, through literary texts, the model that repositions AI translation within the curriculum effectively cultivates critical discernment and integrated digital literacy. The “gap between interpretation and critical judgment” revealed here points to the next stage toward which literary translation education in the AI era should advance.

본 연구는 AI 번역 시대에 요구되는 학습자의 해석학적 주체성과 비판적 역량을 강화하기 위한 〈일본문학번역실습〉수업 모델을 제시하고 그 성과를 분석한다. 실습은 2026년 1학기 학부생 22명을 대상으로, 간결한 문체 이면에 건조한 어조와 반전 구조를 지닌 호시 신이치의 초단편(Short-Short) 소설 16편과 AI 창작 소설 1편 등 ‘로봇성’을 다층적으로 형상화한 텍스트군을 활용해 진행되었다. 수업은 원문, 기존 출판 번역, AI 번역을 대조하는 ‘3자 대역(対訳) 비교’ 방식으로 운영되었으며, 학습자는 기계번역의 장점과 한계를 진단하고 주체적 포스트에디팅을 수행했다. 또한 ‘결말부 반전’ 분석을 필수 과제로 설정하여, AI 번역이 노출하는 거시적 맥락 통제력의 공백을 비판적으로 검토하게 했다. 발표 사례의 정성적 분석 결과, 학습자의 수행은 해석적 판단을 완결한 ‘완성형’, 반전은 독해했으나 비평적 결단을 유보한 ‘근접형’, 반전을 독립적 분석 단계로 구조화하지 못하고 원문 오독 등을 보인 ‘분절형’으로 분화되어 해석과 판단 사이의 역량 간극이 가시화되었다. 아울러 동일 작품의 분할 발표에서는 같은 원문이 학습자의 지향점에 따라 다원화되는 양상 또한 확인되었다. 학기 종료 시점의 설문조사에서는 90.9%가 최종 관문으로서 인간 번역가의 책임을 체감한다고 답했다. 이상의 결과는 문학 텍스트를 매개로 AI 번역 기술을 교육과정 내에 재배치하는 본 수업 모델이 학습자의 비판적 안목과 통합적 디지털 리터러시 함양에 유효함을 보여준다. 나아가 본 연구가 가시화한 ‘해석과 비평적 판단 사이의 간극’은 AI 번역 시대의 문학 번역 교육이 도달해야 할 지점을 가리킨다는 점에서 향후 교수법 설계에 대한 구체적 단서를 제공한다.
