Reading Hōjō Tamio's “Inochi no shoya” with Levinas and Canguilhem : From the Life That Cannot Die to the Life Born Anew
This paper is a reading of the two faces of “life” (inochi) in Hōjō Tamio's “Inochi no shoya” (Life's First Night, 1936) through Emmanuel Levinas' notion of “il y a” and Georges Canguilhem's concept of vital normativity. It clarifies how the turn between the two is mediated within the work. It analyzes the protagonist Oda's repeated, failed suicides and the life that “clings stickily” to his whole body as figures of anonymous existence from which even death offers no exit (il y a). Conversely, Saeki's “resurrection” and “new eyes” are read as figures of vital normativity, which is the institution of new norms of life upon the condition of illness. The two concepts are presented not as stages of a single continuous philosophical transition but as heuristic frameworks, with each illuminating a different aspect of the text's own double structure. The two aspects are joined not by a concept but by a relational event narratively constructed by the work: the mediation of the other, Saeki. He watches Oda's failed suicide attempt from beginning to end, calls his name at the point of utter placelessness, appeals to him never to die, and enacts the new norm in advance through care and writing; the turn takes place through this chain of relations. The reading thereby clarifies what previous scholarship, focused on deprivation and acceptance, left underconceptualized: the nature of the turn from the life that cannot die to the life born anew, which proves to be neither resignation nor a completed narrative of overcoming but an active and unfinished institution of new norms. In the face of the other, these norms are renewed under the condition of illness and segregation.
