A Cognitive Semantic Study of Korean, Chinese, and Japanese Lexical Expressions Containing ‘벌레/虫’ from a Trans-East Asian Perspective: Focusing on the Patterns of Semantic Extension to Human-Referential Expressions
In our study, we provide a synchronic, contrastive analysis, from a cognitive linguistic perspective, of metaphorical semantic extension of Korean, Chinese, and Japanese person-referring expressions based on “insect/bug”(벌레/충(蟲), 虫(chóng), 虫(むし)). By extracting [+human] lexical items from dictionaries and corpora (41 in Korean, 43 in Chinese, 31 in Japanese), we identify extension patterns commonly associated with [sustained immersion], [negative evaluation], and [archetypal ecological projection] across all three languages. However, the schemas foregrounded within these shared categories differ by language. Korean activates a “dehumanization” schema, stigmatizing social groups with the suffix “-충(蟲)”. In Chinese, the ecological trait of resource consumption is mapped onto technological and capital systems to yield an “encroachment” schema for market disruptors. The traditional notion of an internal bug is extended into an “involuntary state” schema to express dispositions beyond control in Japanese. Thus, giving credence to a distinct schema, each language reflects its sociocultural context. Our study contributes to animal metaphor research by treating “bug/insect”-the lowest tier in the Great Chain of Being-as an independent object of contrastive analysis. Although it moves beyond prior work on large animals or proverbs, it leaves diachronic backgrounds for future research.
