A Comparative Study of Recommendation Request Emails in Japanese by Vietnamese, Japanese, and Korean Speakers:Through Politeness Strategies
Using the I-JAS corpus, our study compares and analyzes the use of politeness strategies in recommendation request emails written by Vietnamese learners of Japanese, Korean learners of Japanese, and native Japanese speakers. The data consisted of recommendation request emails produced by 20 Vietnamese learners, 20 Korean learners, and 20 native Japanese speakers (60 participants in total), all of whom subscribed to the intermediate proficiency level (SPOT vocabulary scores: 56-80). We analyzed five categories of politeness strategies: gratitude, consideration, self-deprecation, apology, and burden mitigation. We examined and compared the three groups for both the frequency and the specific linguistic expressions used in each category. Our results revealed that native Japanese speakers employed the highest overall frequency of politeness strategies, with self-deprecation being the most distinctive feature. In contrast, Vietnamese learners used gratitude expressions most frequently, whereas Korean learners showed a high tendency to employ burden mitigation strategies. Furthermore, native Japanese speakers used a wide range of indirect expressions that demonstrated consideration for the recipient's time and psychological burden, while learners relied more heavily on conventional formulaic expressions. Korean learners frequently used conditional expressions that allowed the recipient more freedom to decide whether to accept the request, whereas Vietnamese learners tended to directly express gratitude. These findings suggest that the use of politeness strategies in recommendation request emails is influenced by the first language and the cultural background of learners. Our study contributes to Japanese language education by clarifying both the similarities and differences in politeness strategies among Vietnamese learners, Korean learners, and native Japanese speakers. The results provide pedagogical implications for teaching request expressions in Japanese.
