Focusing on “subject ellipsis” that frequently occurs in the utterances of both languages, our study was conducted with the purpose of clarifying the differences in context-dependence between the Japanese and Korean languages that belong to the same high-context culture. To this end, we conducted a contrastive analysis of original and remake dramas from Japan and Korea to examine the variations in the frequency of subject ellipsis, restoration positions, and speech functions of the two languages. According to the research findings, subject ellipsis occurred at nearly identical frequencies in both Japanese and Korean; however, clear differences in the analysis of restoration positions and speech functions emerged between the two languages. Subject ellipsis was more frequently restored through non-linguistic context in Japanese than in Korean. Conversely, it was confirmed that Korean exhibited a higher frequency of supplementation of ellipsis information with linguistic context than Japanese. When linguistic context was classified into anaphora and cataphora, anaphoric reference appeared more frequently in Korean and cataphoric reference was predominant in Japanese. Furthermore, the functional analysis of speech indicated that Korean demonstrated a higher tendency toward subject ellipsis in “information request” and “suggestion” utterances than Japanese. These results demonstrate that variations exist in the specific formats and scenes of context-dependence.
