Incestuous Enclosure and the (Im)possibility of Coexistence : Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Fire Punch and Its Vicinity
In our study, we examine the symptoms of the era projected in Tatsuki Fujimoto's Fire Punch by analyzing the excess imagery, such as body mutilation, the death drive, the concept of “acting,” the injunction to “live,” and incestuous representations, alongside antagonistic relations across multiple levels. While simultaneously demonstrating a desire for resistant subjectification that dismantles the “body” as a social norm, the excess imagery of mutilation and pain mirrors an epochal symptom that reduces human beings to instrumental objects within the text. This duality and its antagonism are also manifested in two opposing terms: the endlessly uttered, groundless injunction to “live,” and the counterposed death drive expressed through “I want to die” or “die.” Furthermore, each of these terms ambiguously exhibits both conformist and resistant dimensions. As an attempt to construct a new “self” atop the realization that one is inevitably conditioned by systemic structures, the concept of “acting” serves as a medium bridging this gap and frequently appears in the cultural texts of the 2000s. Although incestuous motifs and configurations have surfaced with notable frequency since the 2000s, what is critical is not merely their frequency but rather the historical signs or symptoms they unveil. The incest motif, though offering subversive pleasure and resistance by violating social taboos, fails to sublimate into the symbolic order. Instead, it remains confined within the enclosed space of imaginary identification, thereby exposing the limitations of what Slavoj Žižek terms “incestuous claustrophobia.” Concurrently manifesting an epochal resignation steeped in enclosed relationality, Fire Punch explores the possibility of subjectification and resistance against normative structures through acting and deconstruction.
