An Analysis of the Classification Content and Its Didactic Transposition in Grades 1–4 Elementary Mathematics Textbooks and Teachers’Guides Under the 2022 Revised National Curriculum
This study analyzes how the content of classification is structured and sequenced across grades and domains and how it is didactically transposed in elementary mathematics textbooks and teachers’guides under the 2022 Revised National Curriculum. Anchoring the analytic boundary to where the curriculum itself names ‘classification’, the study distinguished explicit from latent classification and, drawing on Chevallard’s theory of didactic transposition, coded the ways in which classification criteria are presented in fourth-grade shape classification and in data classification (Grades 3–4) across nine authorized textbook series. Preceded by pre-classification activities in Grade 1, classification appears as an independent unit only in Grade 2 and is latently sequenced thereafter as a thinking tool underlying data organization and the formation of geometric concepts. In fourth-grade shape classification, the presentation of classification criteria was relatively homogeneous —seven of the nine series were of the textbook-given type, while two(Series A and F) were of the open-then-converging(eclectic) type, in which students first set their own criteria before converging on the given ones—whereas the order of criteria, the introductory contexts, and the division of roles between textbooks and teachers’ guides varied. In contrast, in data classification(Grades 3–4) the criteria were progressively opened to students, so the locus of criterion-setting differed sharply by domain. This contrast suggests that the direction of the didactic transposition of classification tends to vary with the nature of the knowledge at stake: procedural in data handling versus definition-bound in geometry. These findings suggest reconceptualizing classification as a cross-domain thinking function and strengthening students’experience of setting classification criteria.
