The Imjin War brought a severe crisis to the Joseon Buddhist community, resulting in the destruction of temple halls and the loss of practice spaces. However, the participation of Righteous monastic armies highlighted the national utility of Buddhism, turning the crisis into an opportunity for revival. Accordingly, this study examines the post-war reconstruction and foundation patterns of Honam temples associated with the Righteous monastic armies, focusing on Hwaeomsa Temple, Songgwangsa Temple in Suncheon, Heungguksa Temple, and Songgwangsa Temple in Wanju. Moving beyond individual analyses of single temples, this paper comprehensively compares and analyzes these sites to derive the common characteristics and significance of temple construction projects led by the Disciples of the Buhyu lineage. In particular, this study re-evaluates the status of Heungguksa Temple, which previous research assumed to be the main headquarters temple (Jujinsa) of the Righteous monastic navy during the Imjin War. Withholding a definitive conclusion on whether it served as the main headquarters during the war, this paper instead focuses on tracking its functional transformation after the 18th century as the supervisory temple for the Righteous monastic army under the Jeolla Left Naval Station. Hwaeomsa Temple was destroyed by retaliatory arson by Japanese forces following the Battle of Seokjugwan, where 153 monastic soldiers fell in battle; its reconstruction began in 1630 under the leadership of Byeokam Gakseong. Songgwangsa Temple in Suncheon underwent reconstruction starting with the invitation of Buhyu Seonsu in 1609, continuing through Byeokam Gakseong to his dharma descendant Baekam Seongchong, centered on honoring Jinul and strengthening the identity of the Buhyu lineage. Although historical records do not conclusively prove whether Heungguksa Temple served as a main headquarters during the Imjin War, it established its status after the 18th century as the supreme monastic army garrison under the Paldo Dochongseop(八道都摠攝) system. Despite the prohibition on temple foundation in the Gyeongguk daejeon(『經國大典』), Songgwangsa Temple in Wanju was exceptionally founded in 1622 through connections with Jinul and Byeokam Gakseong(碧巖覺性), expanding the stronghold of the Buhyu(浮休) lineage into northern Jeolla Province. The reconstruction and foundation of these temples shared common patterns: the standardization of temple layouts ranging from the rebuilding of the Main Buddha Hall(大雄殿) to the creation of the Cheonwangmun Gate, the reflection of faith tendencies unique to the Buhyu lineage—such as combining the Trikaya(三信佛) with the 53 Buddhas—and the restoration of practice traditions through the publication of Jinul’s writings and the establishment of monastic seminary curricula. These reconstruction and foundation projects among Honam temples aligned with national demands to restore destroyed monastic garrisons and maintain the post-war monastic army system. Furthermore, they secured royal patronage, serving as a catalyst for establishing the economic foundation of the temples. Ultimately, the reconstruction and foundation of Honam temples led by the Disciples of the Buhyu lineage after the Imjin War went beyond mere physical restoration. They expanded the geographical strongholds of the Buddhist community, visualized protective Buddhist faith, re-established practice and educational systems, and built a structural foundation for the revival of late Joseon Buddhism through organic connections with the state.
