This article examines narratives of loyalty and filial piety in the Biographies (Yeoljeon) of the Samguksagi to investigate the discursive mechanisms through which contradictory acts—such as dying for the state, cutting flesh from one's thigh, and selling oneself into servitude—were incorporated into the category of filial piety despite violating its fundamental principles of bodily preservation, parental support, and attending to parents' emotional well-being. The narratives of , , , and depict death for the state as the fulfillment of supreme filial piety in terms of inheriting paternal integrity and enhancing family honor. In doing so, loyalty overturns the Confucian principle of bodily preservation and removes the implication that death itself constitutes unfilial conduct. Among these works, however, exposes the possibility that dying for the state may itself violate filial piety, revealing that ethical contradiction is never completely eliminated. and , by contrast, demonstrate that the values deferred within the discourse of loyalty remain problematic in the sphere of family ethics. While suppresses the consequences of bodily sacrifice through narrative omission, foregrounds the mother's suffering caused by her daughter's self-sale. In both cases, state rewards and official commendation retrospectively resolve the ethical contradictions by addressing the economic conditions that led to the protagonists’ sacrifices, while their very implementation produces the performative effect of recognizing those sacrifices as filial conduct. Dying for the state, cutting flesh from one’s thigh, and selling oneself into servitude are all acts situated at the boundary of the norms of filial piety. Their ethical contradictions are managed through external authorities—namely loyalty and state power—which incorporate realities lying beyond the norm into the moral order of filial piety. The discourse of loyalty prioritizes loyalty over bodily preservation and parental care, whereas the discourse completed through state intervention removes the very conditions that generate ethical contradiction and assigns higher moral value to self-sacrifice for one's parents. The principal actors in these discourses are aristocratic and official men and lower-class men and women, respectively; the logic for justifying and resolving ethical contradictions thus varies by class and gender, as such contradictions arise differently according to the actors’ social and familial roles and material conditions. Ultimately, the filial-piety discourse in the Samguk sagi is governed by the principle of constructing the boundary between filial and unfilial conduct by determining which conflicting values should be prioritized, deferred, or excluded. Its social binding force is generated through this process of incorporating boundary-crossing acts into the normative order of filial piety.
