The Associations among the Beonam Group Literati as Examined through the Sino-Korean Poems in Muhoamjip 『
This study examines the Sino-Korean poems contained in Yun Pil-byeong’s Muhoamjip and elucidates the patterns of literary and personal association among the members of the Beonam group, which constituted a major axis of the Namin literati in the late eighteenth century. While previous studies have primarily focused on senior Namin literati of the same generation as Beonam Chae Je-gong and on younger emerging literati centered around Jeong Yak-yong, this study offers a detailed examination of the relationships among Beonam’s close juniors and core associates such as Yi Jeong-un, Yi Ik-un, Chae Hong-ri, and Jeong Jae-won who have received only incidental attention in previous studies. Muhoamjip contains four volumes of Sino-Korean poetry arranged into collections such as “Seoyurok,” “Bunhorok,” “Namyurok,” “Daereungrok,” “Gwandongrok,” and “Okgyerok”. These collections are organized either according to individual official appointments or around the places in which Yun lived in retirement. This study seeks to demonstrate that Yun’s official career and literary activities were closely intertwined with the political fortunes of the Beonam group. To this end, the study first examines Yun’s reverence for Chae and his consistent adherence to political loyalty even after Chae’s death. It then analyzes his literary associations and sense of political solidarity with Yi Jeong-un and Chae Hong-ri, the so-called “Daereung Samno,” who lived together in Daejeongdong and actively engaged in poetic exchanges, as well as with other Namin literati, including Gwon Eom, who participated in poetry gatherings held there. The study also investigates Yun’s association with Jeong Jae-won, who was connected to him through both kinship and political fellowship, during Yun’s retirement at Bungang in the 1780s, when Beonam faced his most severe political difficulties. In addition, it examines Yun’s continuing association with Yi Ikun, his lifelong political and literary companion, after Yun returned to Pocheon following Beonam’s death. Through these analyses, this study argues that the political cohesion of the Beonam group was founded not only on partisan affiliation and intellectual lineage, but also on geographical proximity, kinship ties, shared literary activities, and a sustained commitment to political loyalty. Muhoamjip is therefore of considerable literary and documentary value, as it illuminates in concrete terms the literary activities of the core members of the Beonam group who belonged to its middle generation and provides important evidence for understanding the cohesion of the Namin literary circle in the eighteenth century.
