Objectives The purpose of this study was to reinterpret imitation in dance based on Aristotle's concept of mimesis and to explore its implications for dance creation and dance education. Specifically, this study aimed to derive analytical criteria for imitation grounded in mimesis and to examine their applicability to dance creation and dance education. Methods This study employed a qualitative research design using literature analysis and Focus Group Interview(FGI). The literature analysis examined Aristotle's concept of mimesis and previous studies on imitation in dance. In addition, FGI with experts were conducted to explore the meaning of imitation in dance and its applicability to dance creation and dance education. The collected data were categorized and interpreted through the constant comparative method. Results The findings were as follows. First, imitation in dance was found to be a process grounded in a thorough understanding of the object being represented. Second, imitation involved an interpretive construction process in which the creator's experiences and artistic context generated new meanings. Third, imitation was understood not as simple replication but as a process of creative representation that develops into original artistic expression. Conclusions This study reinterpreted imitation in dance from the perspective of the creative process rather than focusing on the similarity of outcomes or copyright issues, and proposed analytical criteria for imitation based on Aristotle's concept of mimesis. The findings provide a theoretical foundation for understanding and applying the creative and educational value of imitation in dance creation and dance education.

본 연구는 아리스토텔레스의 미메시스 개념을 토대로 무용에서의 모방을 재해석하고, 이를 무용창작과 무용교육의 관점에서 탐색하는 데 목적이 있다. 오늘날 디지털 플랫폼과 영상 매체의 확산으로 다양한 무용작품에 대한 접근성이 높아지면서 모방과 표절의 경계에 관한 논의가 지속되고 있다. 그러나 기존 연구는 주로 결과물의 유사성이나 저작권 문제를 중심으로 모방을 이해하거나, 미메시스의 철학적 의미를 해석하는 데 집중되어 왔다. 이에 본 연구는 문헌분석과 전문가 FGI를 실시하여 무용에서의 모방을 미메시스의 관점에서 분석하였다. 연구결과, 첫째, 모방은 재현 대상에 대한 이해를 전제로 이루어지는 과정으로 나타났다. 둘째, 모방은 창작자의 경험과 맥락이 반영되는 해석적 구성 과정을 통해 새로운 의미를 형성하는 것으로 확인되었다. 셋째, 모방은 단순한 복제가 아닌 창조적 재현의 과정을 통해 독창적인 예술 표현으로 발전하는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 본 연구는 무용에서의 모방을 결과 중심의 유사성 판단이 아닌 창작 과정으로 재해석하였으며, 무용창작과 무용교육에서 미메시스를 활용할 수 있는 이론적 토대를 제시하였다는 점에서 의의가 있다.
