Comparison of Exercise Participation Characteristics and Sleep Quality Between Elite Athletes and Recreational Participants in Racket Sports
Objectives This study compared sleep quality and exercise participation characteristics between elite athletes and recreational participants in racket sports and examined exercise- and sleep-related factors associated with elite-athlete status. Methods A cross-sectional online survey included 270 Korean racket-sport participants (172 elite athletes and 98 recreational participants). Sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and sex, exercise experience, weekly exercise frequency, and duration were examined. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent-samples t-tests, chi-square tests, and binary logistic regression. Results The PSQI global score did not differ significantly between elite athletes and recreational participants (9.16±2.09 vs. 9.59±3.46, p=.266). Among the PSQI components, elite athletes had a significantly higher subjective sleep quality score than recreational participants (p=.001), whereas recreational participants had significantly higher sleep duration and sleep medication use scores (both p<.001). In the final logistic regression model, exercising ≥5 days per week (OR=162.85, 95% CI=28.93–916.56, p<.001) and exercising ≥4 hours per week (OR=6.46, 95% CI=1.40–29.84, p=.017) were significantly associated with elite-athlete status. In contrast, the PSQI global score was not significantly associated with elite-athlete status (OR=0.98, 95% CI=0.82–1.16, p=.774). Conclusions Overall sleep quality was similar between elite athletes and recreational participants, although specific PSQI components differed. Elite athletes reported poorer subjective sleep quality, whereas recreational participants had greater problems with sleep duration and medication use. Exercise frequency and duration, rather than the PSQI global score, were associated with elite-athlete status.
