Objectives This study examined changes in match officiating and game management indicators across different phases of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) implementation in K League 1. Methods A total of 2,052 K League 1 matches played between the 2015 and 2024 seasons were analyzed, excluding the 2020 season because of COVID-19-related changes in league operations. Matches were classified into three periods: pre-VAR (2015–2017), early VAR implementation (2018, 2019, and 2021), and the recent operational period (2022–2024). The average numbers of goals, penalty kicks, fouls, yellow cards, red cards, offsides, and added time per match were compared across the three periods. Results No significant differences were found in goals, penalty kicks, or red cards among the three periods. In contrast, fouls, yellow cards, and offsides differed significantly across the periods. Fouls showed a decreasing trend from the pre-VAR to the recent operational period (η² = .154), while offsides were significantly lower in the early and recent operational periods than in the pre-VAR period. Added time was significantly longer in the recent operational period than in the other two periods (η² = .219). Conclusions These findings indicate changes in match officiating indicators (e.g., fouls and offsides) and the game management indicator (added time) across different phases of VAR implementation. The increase in added time during the recent operational period may be associated with both the stabilization of VAR operations and the IFAB's updated added-time guidelines after 2022.

본 연구의 목적은 K리그1에서 VAR(Video Assistant Referee) 도입 시기에 따른 경기 판정 및 경기 운영 지표의 변화를 분석하는 데 있다. 분석 대상은 2015–2024시즌 K리그1 경기 중 코로나19로 인해 운영방식이 달라진 2020시즌을 제외한 총 2,052경기이며, VAR 도입 이전(2015–2017), 도입 초기(2018·2019·2021), 최근 운영기(2022–2024)의 세 시기로 구분하였다. 경기당 평균 득점, 페널티킥, 반칙, 경고, 퇴장, 오프사이드 및 추가시간을 시기별로 비교하였다. 연구 결과, 득점, 페널티킥 및 퇴장은 시기 간 유의한 차이가 나타나지 않았다. 반면 반칙, 경고 및 오프사이드는 시기별 유의한 차이가 나타났으며, 반칙은 도입 이전, 도입 초기, 최근 운영기 순으로 감소하는 경향을 보였다(η²=.154). 오프사이드 역시 도입 이전보다 도입 초기와 최근 운영기에서 유의하게 낮았다. 추가시간은 최근 운영기에서 도입 이전과 도입 초기보다 유의하게 길었으며(η²=.219), 도입 이전과 도입 초기 간에는 유의한 차이가 나타나지 않았다. 이상의 결과는 VAR 도입 시기에 따라 반칙과 오프사이드 등 경기 판정 지표와 추가시간 등 경기 운영지표에서 변화가 나타났음을 보여준다. 또한 최근 운영기의 추가시간 증가는 VAR 운영의 안정화와 2022년 이후 IFAB의 추가시간 산정 기준 강화가 함께 반영된 결과일 가능성을 시사한다. 본 연구는 K리그1의 장기 자료를 활용하여 VAR 운영 시기별 경기 판정 및 경기 운영 지표의 변화를 분석하였다는 점에서 의의가 있으며, 향후 K리그 VAR 운영 및 경기 운영 정책을 위한 기초자료를 제공할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.
