Objectives This study aimed to identify the structure of media discourse on elementary school playgrounds in South Korea and to examine how it has changed over time. Methods A total of 583 news articles published by 13 national media outlets from January 2012 to June 2026 were collected from the BIGKinds database. TF and TF-IDF analyses and LDA topic modeling were conducted, yielding 11 topics, and three periods were identified inductively from period-based topic proportions. Results The 11 topics were categorized into three higher-order discourses: facility safety and environment, space utilization and play, and use, participation, and conflict. Safety-related discourse, led by the hazardous urethane track issue, dominated Period 1 (2012–2016); utilization and play discourse rose to the largest share in Period 2 (2017–2021); and conflict-related discourse, driven by playground opening disputes and noise complaints, became dominant in Period 3 (2022–2026). The media discourse shifted from a space of risk through a space of utilization to a space of conflict. Conclusions The playground has come to be framed as a space where complaints and responsibility are concentrated, suggesting the need for interest-mediation mechanisms and legal protection of educational activities in elementary physical education.

본 연구는 초등학교 운동장에 관한 언론 담론의 구조와 시기별 변화를 규명하는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 한국언론진흥재단의 빅카인즈에서 2012년 1월부터 2026년 6월까지 전국 종합일간지와 방송사 등 13개 매체가 보도한 뉴스 기사 583건을 수집하고, TF·TF-IDF 분석과 LDA 토픽모델링을 실시하였다. 그 결과 11개의 토픽이 도출되었으며, 도출된 토픽은 시설 안전과 환경, 공간 활용과 놀이, 이용 참여와 갈등이라는 세 가지 상위 담론으로 범주화되었다. 시기별 토픽 점유율을 바탕으로 세 시기를 귀납적으로 구분한 결과, 1기(2012~2016년)에는 우레탄 트랙 유해성 논란을 중심으로 한 시설 안전과 환경 담론이 가장 높은 비중을 차지하였다. 2기(2017~2021년)에는 공간 활용과 놀이 담론이 부상하였으며, 3기(2022~2026년)에는 운동장 개방 갈등과 소음 민원을 중심으로 한 이용 참여와 갈등 담론이 지배적인 것으로 나타났다. 즉, 초등학교 운동장에 관한 언론 담론이 위험의 공간에서 활용의 공간을 거쳐 갈등의 공간으로 이동해 왔음을 알 수 있다. 이러한 결과는 운동장이 민원과 책임이 집중되는 공간으로 재구성되고 있음을 보여준다. 결론적으로 운동장을 초등체육의 교육 공간으로 회복하기 위해서는 학교 안팎의 요구를 조정하는 이해 조정 장치와 교육활동 보장을 위한 법제 보완이 필요할 것으로 판단된다.
