Whether supply chain finance (SCF) functions beyond a simple solution to liquidity constraints has attracted scholars‘ interest. While previous studies have focused on its financial and operational benefits, its possible effect on enterprise strategic risk-taking has received limited attention. In this respect, this study investigates the impact of SCF on enterprise risk-taking behavior and the moderating roles of ownership concentration, ownership type, and digitalization. This study uses panel data on Chinese A-share listed companies between 2014 and 2023. The estimation strategy includes firm and year fixed effects with instrumental variable corrections, supplemented by robustness checks and heterogeneity analysis. The empirical results show that greater use of SCF is associated with higher enterprise risk-taking. However, this positive relationship is weakened when ownership is highly concentrated and when the enterprise is state-owned. On the other hand, digital transformation has no statistically significant moderating effect on the relationship between SCF and risk-taking. The present paper sheds light on a relatively neglected behavioral dimension by linking SCF to enterprise strategic orientation. In addition, the moderating effect analysis underlines that internal governance arrangements and the institutional environment are crucial in shaping how enterprises allocate liquidity generated from supply chain collaboration. These results inform enterprise practitioners about balancing financing flexibility with prudent strategic control and provide regulators with empirical evidence to support the healthy and sustainable development of supply chains.
