This study examines the individual mediating effects of the Environmental (E), Social (S), and Governance (G) dimensions of ESG on the relationship between innovation activities and firm value using a sample of KOSPI and KOSDAQ listed manufacturing firms that received government R&D support from 2017 to 2021. The results are summarized as follows. First, the Environmental and Social dimensions exhibit significant partial mediating effects on the relationship between innovation activities and firm value, whereas no significant mediating effect is found for the Governance dimension. Second, additional analyses reveal that only the Social dimension has a significant partial mediating effect in high-technology and medium-high-technology industries. These findings suggest that the roles of the individual ESG dimensions differ and that, in technology-intensive industries, the Social dimension serves as a key channel through which innovation activities are translated into firm value. Unlike most prior studies that rely on aggregate ESG scores or ESG ratings, this study employs firm-level Environmental, Social, and Governance scores to identify the structural mechanism through which innovation activities are transformed into firm value at the individual ESG-dimension level. Accordingly, this study contributes to the literature by providing a more comprehensive understanding of the distinct mediating roles of the individual ESG dimensions. Furthermore, by examining firms that received government R&D support, the findings provide practical implications for government R&D support policies and for firms in developing ESG-based sustainability management strategies.
