This study examines the changing modes of accepting reality in Baek Seok’s later poems. Focusing on From the North, There Is a White Wall, and In the Room of Park Si-bong in Yudong, South Sinuiju, it analyzes how the poetic speaker reconstructs the past and identifies the causes of his present circumstances in order to comprehend the reality he faces. All three poems are set against circumstances marked by loss, solitude, poverty, and sorrow, and they share the feature that the speaker retrospectively reflects on his life and thereby reconstructs the meaning of reality. They differ markedly, however, in the ways they locate the causes of reality and in the attitudes through which that reality is accepted. This study understands these differences as a process of retrospectively establishing a “point of conclusion” in relation to the past from the standpoint of the present, and examines how causal relations between past and present are formed and transformed in each poem. In From the North, the speaker interprets the present condition of “absence” as the result of his past “betrayal,” “deception,” and “shame,” thereby understanding his life as a tragedy of his own making. By contrast, in There Is a White Wall, poverty and solitude are reinterpreted as a destiny bestowed by “Heaven” upon those whom it holds dear, thereby transforming the speaker’s reality into a precious condition that he must endure as a poet. In In the Room of Park Si-bong in Yudong, South Sinuiju, however, even this fatalistic understanding begins to falter, as the speaker recognizes that the causes of reality cannot be fully explained either by past wrongdoing or by the intention of a transcendent being. The “steadfast and resolute buckthorn tree” that emerges at this point does not function as a symbol that explains the causal structure of reality; rather, it serves as an ethical and epistemological figure that opens up a new question of how one should live within an incomprehensible reality. This study thus argues that, while the three poems share a common structure of retrospectively reconstructing the past in order to understand present reality, they differ in where they locate the cause of that reality: respectively, in the self, in a transcendent being, and in the impossibility of assigning a determinate cause. The study ultimately elucidates these differences as distinct modes of understanding and accepting reality.

본고는 백석의 후기 시편에 나타나는 현실 수용 양상의 변화 과정을 살피는것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 ｢北方에서｣, ｢힌 바람벽이 있어｣, ｢南新義州柳 洞朴時逢方｣을 중심으로, 시적 화자가 현재의 현실을 이해하기 위해 과거를 재구성하고 삶의 원인을 정립하는 방식을 분석하였다. 세 작품은 모두 상실과 고독, 가난과 슬픔으로 점철된 현실을 배경으로 하며, 화자가 자신의 삶을 되돌아보면서 현실의 의미를 새롭게 구성한다는 공통점을 지닌다. 그러나 현실의 원인을 설정하는 방식과 그에 따른 수용 태도에서는 뚜렷한 차이를 보인다. 본고는이러한 차이를 현재의 관점에서 과거의 의미를 소급적으로 정립하는 ‘마침표’의 과정으로 파악하고, 각 작품에서 현실과 과거의 인과관계가 어떻게 형성되고 변형되는지를 검토하였다. ｢北方에서｣의 화자는 현실의 ‘없음’을 과거의 ‘배반’과 ‘속임’, ‘부끄러움’이초래한 결과로 받아들이며 삶을 스스로 초래한 비극으로 이해한다. 반면 ｢힌 바람벽이 있어｣에서는 가난하고 외로운 삶을 “하눌”이 귀하고 사랑하는 존재에게부여한 운명으로 의미화함으로써, 현실을 시인으로서 감당해야 할 귀한 조건으로 전환한다. ｢南新義州柳洞朴時逢方｣에서는 이러한 운명론적 인식마저 흔들리며, 현실의 원인을 과거의 잘못이나 초월적 존재의 의도로 온전히 설명할 수없다는 인식이 나타난다. 이때 출현하는 “굳고 정한 갈매나무”는 현실의 인과를해명하는 상징이 아니라, 불가해한 현실 속에서 어떻게 살아갈 것인가라는 새로운 질문을 가능하게 하는 윤리적·인식론적 표상이다. 이를 통해 본고는 세 작품이 현재의 현실을 이해하기 위한 소급적 재구성의 구조를 공유하면서도, 현실의원인을 각각 자기 자신, 초월적 존재, 그리고 원인 귀속의 불가능성이라는 서로다른 지점에 놓고 있음을 밝히고자 하였으며, 그 차이를 살피는 것에 초점을 맞추고자 하였다.
