An Analysis of Place Markers for the Study of Coal Mine Poetry as Regional Literature : Focusing on the Anthology of Korean Coal Mine Poems
This study quantitatively analyzes the overall composition of the Anthology of Korean Coal Mine Poemsand the place markers appearing in the poems as a foundational inquiry intended to broaden the scope of research on coal mine poetry. The coal mine poems included in the anthology were produced predominantly after the introduction of the Coal Industry Rationalization Policy in 1989. During this period, regional literary journals centered on Taebaek, Gangwon Province, particularly Tanjeon Munhak(Coalfield Literature), made a significant contribution to discourse on coal mine poetry. These quantitative indicators suggest that coal mine poetry developed in close relation to the changing social and regional realities following the Coal Industry Rationalization Policy. The prompt and translocal responses of the regional literary field identified here warrant more focused examination in subsequent research. The study then extracts place markers from the coal mine poems included in the anthology and analyzes them by period, region, and type of relation. During the decline phase, place markers were found in more than half of the coal mine poems produced in that period. At the broad regional level, Gangwon was the most frequently represented area, while Taebaek was the most frequently represented locality. This distribution primarily reflects the scale and geographical distribution of Korea’s coal industry. However, the place markers in coal mine poetry cannot be reduced to a single administrative unit; rather, they reveal multilayered and complex configurations of locality. The analysis further suggests that these place markers are grounded in the lifeworld and form networks across localities. Accordingly, relations among localities and patterns of mobility represented in coal mine poetry require particular attention in examining its translocality. Quantitative analysis inevitably has limitations in addressing the specific and richly textured meanings of individual poetic texts, and these limitations should be addressed through subsequent research. Nevertheless, by analyzing the place markers in the Anthology of Korean Coal Mine Poems at multiple levels, this study identifies several significant tendencies and characteristics, including the responsiveness of the regional literary field, connections and mobility across localities, and linkages between patterns of publication media and regional cultural movements. The findings are expected to provide a basis for further research on coal mine poetry as regional literature, particularly in relation to literary and regional media, cultural movements, and translocality.
