The purpose of this study was to examine the psychological changes and counseling implications of relationship-based play counseling for an elementary school child from a single-parent family who had experienced parental divorce. The child experienced emotional difficulties while adjusting to changes in the family environment following parental divorce and tended to suppress and internalize emotions. The counseling consisted of ten weekly 50-minute sessions. Based on case conceptualization, the intervention focused on establishing a stable therapeutic relationship and emotional security during the initial stage, facilitating emotional exploration and expression through play during the middle stage, and enhancing self-understanding, self-efficacy, and integration of therapeutic changes during the final stage. Data were analyzed using counseling records, behavioral observations, and the child’s verbal and nonverbal expressions. The results showed that the child gradually moved from avoiding or indirectly expressing emotions to directly expressing sadness, disappointment, fear, and concerns related to parental divorce and family experiences. In addition, the child demonstrated greater awareness and acceptance of emotions, reconstructed family experiences, and expressed personal needs and future aspirations more confidently. During the later stage of counseling, positive changes related to self-efficacy were observed, as the child recognized personal strengths and expressed greater hope for the future. Positive changes were also observed in self-understanding and psychological adjustment, while the caregiver reported increased emotional expression and more positive interpersonal interactions. These findings suggest that relationship-based play counseling may be a useful approach for supporting emotional expression, self-understanding, self-efficacy, and psychological adjustment in children from single-parent families who have experienced parental divorce. Furthermore, this study demonstrates the clinical applicability of relationship-based play counseling by presenting a case conceptualization-based intervention process and the counselor’s therapeutic decision-making. It also provides practical and academic implications for applying play counseling in school and counseling settings for children from divorced single-parent families.
