As the serialization of animation IPs continues to expand, prequels have become an important form of derivative narrative. However, research on how prequels expand and reconstruct the narratives and characters of original works remains insufficient. This study examines (1994) and (2024), employing transposition, which Genette (1997) classifies as a form of serious transformation within his theory of hypertextuality, as the primary analytical framework, while using the concept of focalization as a supplementary analytical criterion. Through this framework, the study investigates how prequels expand narratives and reconstruct character meanings. The findings show that (2024) expands the formation processes of events and relationships that were only limitedly presented in the original work by filling narrative gaps and reconstructing character meanings. In addition, through a shift in focalization, the center of narrative information moves from Simba to Mufasa. By supplementing Mufasa’s growth process and the changing relationship between Mufasa and Scar, the film further specifies the causal background of events that were primarily presented through their outcomes in the original work, as well as the motivations underlying the characters’ actions. The findings indicate that (2024) retains the major narrative outcomes and fundamental character relationships established in the original work while adding narrative information that was previously omitted or only limitedly presented. In this respect, the film can be understood as demonstrating transposition, a form of serious transformation. This study contributes to a deeper academic understanding of how prequel animation reconstructs the narratives and characters of original works. The findings also provide useful implications for understanding the narrative characteristics of prequel animation and its strategies of character reconstruction.

애니메이션 IP의 시리즈화가 심화되면서 프리퀄은 중요한 파생 형식으로 자리 잡고 있다. 그러나 프리퀄이 원작의 서사와 캐릭터를 어떠한 방식으로 확장하고 재구성하는지에 대한 연구는 아직 충분하지 않다. 본 연구는 <라이온 킹> (1994)과 <무파사: 라이온 킹> (2024)을 대상으로 Genette (1997)의 하이퍼텍스트성 이론 가운데 진지한 변형에 해당하는 전환을 중심적인 분석 기준으로 설정하고, 초점화 개념을 보조적으로 활용하여 프리퀄의 서사 확장 방식과 캐릭터 의미의 재구성 방식을 고찰하였다. 연구 결과, <무파사: 라이온 킹> (2024)은 서사적 공백의 보완과 캐릭터 의미의 재구성을 통해 원작에서 제한적으로 제시되었던 사건과 관계의 형성 과정을 확장하였으며, 초점화의 전환을 통해 서사 정보의 중심을 심바에서 무파사로 이동시켰다. 또한 무파사의 성장 과정과 무파사와 스카 관계의 변화 과정을 보완적으로 제시함으로써, 원작에서 결과 중심으로 제시되었던 사건의 인과적 배경과 캐릭터의 행동 동기를 구체화하였다. 이를 통해 <무파사: 라이온 킹> (2024)은 원작의 주요 사건 결과와 기본적인 캐릭터 관계를 유지하면서도, 기존에 생략되거나 제한적으로 제시되었던 서사 정보를 추가하는 진지한 변형, 즉 전환의 양상을 보이는 것으로 확인되었다. 본 연구는 프리퀄 애니메이션이 원작의 서사와 캐릭터를 재구성하는 방식에 대한 학술적 이해를 심화하는 데 의의가 있다. 이러한 결과는 프리퀄 애니메이션의 서사적 특성과 캐릭터 재구성 전략을 이해하는 데 유용한 시사점을 제공한다.
