This study analyzes the relationship between the two female characters in the Netflix original series You and Everything Else through Jacques Lacan’s theory of desire. It aims to show that their relationship operates as a structure of mutually mediated desire, in which their desires are shaped and sustained through one another. Using the mirror stage, imaginary identification, the desire of the Other, objet petit a, and the Real as analytical concepts, this study conducts a qualitative textual analysis of major scenes and changes in the relationship across all fifteen episodes. The findings show that Eun-jung and Sang-yeon appear to each other as images of completeness that each lacks, thereby forming a mutual imaginary identification. This identification simultaneously produces envy and inferiority, intimacy and aggression, and structures their repeated separations and returns. Sang-yeon desires the position of being loved and chosen that Eun-jung appears to occupy, whereas Eun-jung desires the position of a competent and recognized creator embodied by Sang-yeon. Recurring figures, creative works, and positions of recognition within the text function as objet petit a by sustaining desire while failing to resolve lack. Even when specific objects or positions are attained, lack is not resolved, and desire shifts toward other objects. Sang-yeon’s illness and death reveal the limits of the imaginary images and symbolic signifiers that have defined their relationship, producing an effect of the Real. This study is significant in that it analyzes female relationships not by reducing them to solidarity, sisterhood, jealousy, or competition, but as a relational structure in which two subjects form their desires through each other’s images, desires, and symbolic positions.

본 연구는 넷플릭스 오리지널 시리즈 <은중과 상연>에 나타난 두 여성 인물의 관계를 라캉의 욕망이론을 통해 분석하고, 이 관계가 서로의 욕망을 형성하고 지속시키는 상호매개적 구조로 작동함을 밝히는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 거울단계와 상상적 동일시, 타자의 욕망, 대상 a, 실재 개념을 분석 틀로 활용하여 <은중과 상연> 전 15화의 주요 장면과 인물 관계의 변화를 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 은중과 상연은 서로에게 자신이 갖지 못한 완전성을 표상하는 이미지로 나타나며 상호적인 상상적 동일시를 형성한다. 이러한 동일시는 선망과 열등감, 친밀감과 공격성을 동시에 발생시키며 두 사람의 반복적인 단절과 회귀를 조직한다. 또한 상연은 은중이 점유한 것으로 보이는 사랑받고 선택받는 위치를, 은중은 상연이 구현하는 유능하고 인정받는 창작자의 위치를 욕망한다. 텍스트 내부에서 반복되는 인물과 창작물, 인정의 자리는 결여를 해소해 줄 것처럼 나타나 욕망을 지속시키는 대상 a의 기능을 수행한다. 그러나 구체적인 대상이나 위치를 획득하더라도 결여는 해소되지 않으며 욕망은 다른 대상으로 이동한다. 상연의 질병과 죽음은 두 사람의 관계를 규정해 온 상상적 이미지와 상징적 기표의 한계를 드러내며 실재의 효과를 발생시킨다. 본 연구는 여성 관계를 연대와 자매애 또는 질투와 경쟁으로 환원하지 않고, 두 주체가 서로의 이미지 욕망, 상징적 위치를 경유해 자신의 욕망을 구성하는 관계적 구조로 분석했다는 점에서 의의를 지닌다.
