This article reexamines the film Pacchigi! (2005)—hitherto discussed primarily as a political and historical text concerning Zainichi Koreans—as a work of popular culture imbued with a retro sensibility. Attending to the fact that, as a commercial film conscious of box-office success, Pacchigi! adopts a sensuous form designed to appeal to a broad audience, it explores how the historical memory and the question of coexistence surrounding Zainichi Koreans and Japanese society are reconfigured within that popular form. To this end, the article first calls attention to the fact that the ‘original’ of Pacchigi! is not confined to Matsuyama Takeshi's memoir but is a text layered from multiple strata: producer Lee Bong-ou's experience at a Korean (Chōsen) school, his dialogue with the film critic Yomota Inuhiko, and director Izutsu Kazuyuki's sense of the era. It then examines how, by virtue of this multilayeredness, the film's setting of ‘Kyoto in 1968’ is rendered present not as a faithful restoration of historical fact but as a fictive time-space in which the memories of different ethnicities, generations, and classes are condensed and brought into collision. It further analyzes how the inserted song Imjin River(Imujingawa) functions as the crucial medium that, even as it sets these heterogeneous strata of memory against one another, nonetheless integrates them into a single narrative. On the basis of this analysis, the article critically reflects on the ambivalence of Pacchigi!'s retro narrative. While the film bears the limitation of suturing the structural problems between Japanese and Zainichi Koreans through the message of ‘coexistence’ and a sentimental ending, it nevertheless holds genuine significance in that, by repeatedly summoning from the past a possibility of solidarity that was never realized, it relativizes the contemporary sensibility that accepts the given present as self-evident. In so doing, the article demonstrates that Pacchigi! does not merely commemorate the past aesthetically but, borrowing the familiar form of the retro, evokes an alternative imagination that has yet to arrive.
