Reconfiguring Representations of Korea in Japanese Newspaper Editorials during the First and Second Hallyu Waves
This study examines how Hallyu became a public issue and how representations of Korea were reconfigured in editorials and opinion texts published by Asahi Shimbun, Mainichi Shimbun, and Yomiuri Shimbun from 2003 to 2012. It analyzes nine unsigned editorials and nine other opinion pieces, columns, and commentaries, focusing on agenda selection, responsibility attribution, editorial language, and the significance of the presence and absence of editorials within newspaper opinion discourse. During the first Hallyu wave, Korea was reconfigured from a recipient of Japanese popular culture into a producer of cultural content consumed in Japan. The analyzed texts described this shift through distinct vocabularies: the removal of barriers, the transition from one-way to two-way cultural flows, and the language of competition and historical ties. From 2005 onward, Hallyu and anti-Hallyu discourse became visible at the same time, revealing what this study terms “conditional intimacy”: cultural affinity and exchange persisted, yet their public efficacy narrowed whenever historical, territorial, or diplomatic conflicts came to the fore. During the second wave, Korea emerged as a competitive reference point for Japan’s cultural industry and nation–branding policy and as a potential partner for cooperation, even as its political otherness resurfaced amid the disputes of 2012. The findings indicate that representations of Korea also functioned as a form of Japanese self–description, reflecting concerns about Japan’s cultural policy, industrial stagnation, nationalism, and regional standing. The limited presence of unsigned editorials, set against Hallyu’s high visibility in general news coverage, reveals the selective conditions under which a cultural phenomenon becomes an object of institutional judgment. This approach extends the scope of Hallyu research from the circulation of content to the formation of public discourse in Japanese society.
