(Purpose) This study aims to explore the residential experiences of long-term Korean residents living in Koryoin-dense areas and the meanings they attribute to those experiences, and to draw policy implications for stable community life and coexistence. (Method) Individual in-depth interviews were conducted with 10 Korean residents living in Ttaetgol Village in Ansan and Hambak Village in Incheon. The collected data were analyzed using a phenomenological research approach. (Results) The findings revealed that the residential experiences of Korean residents were characterized by ambivalence, involving unfamiliarity and adaptation to changing living environments, expectations for local revitalization and feelings of alienation, as well as place attachment and considerations of relocation. Residents perceived changes in street landscapes, the linguistic environment, commercial districts, and everyday living conditions following the growth of the Koryoin population. Although Korean and Koryoin residents lived in close physical proximity, limited linguistic communication and opportunities for interaction contributed to relational distance. Familiarity with the area and place attachment developed through long-term residence provided a basis for continuing to live in the community, while continued residence also emerged as a conditional choice shaped by living conditions and practical constraints. Residents expected Koryoin culture and commercial districts to contribute to local development, while also expressing concerns about the possible separation of everyday living spheres due to insufficient interaction between resident groups. (Conclusion and Implications) These findings suggest that the residential experiences of Korean residents in Koryoin-dense areas should not be understood through a simple dichotomy of acceptance and rejection, but rather as ambivalent experiences in which expectations and inconvenience, relational distance and place attachment coexist. To promote stable coexistence, efforts are needed to improve the living environment for all local residents, provide multilingual information, expand opportunities for interaction, and establish community-level communication and conflict mediation mechanisms.
