This study examines the inner consciousness of Jeong Ho through his poetry. Jeong Ho was a great-great-grandson of Jeong Cheol(鄭澈) and a disciple of Song Si-yeol(宋時烈), and he was active as a leading hardliner within the Noron(⽼論) faction. Jeong Ho composed poems whenever he encountered political events or issues charged with contemporary significance. Such occasions included the posthumous stripping of official titles from Jeong Cheol, the public criticism surrounding the establishment of Mandongmyo Shrine(萬東廟), the Disposition of Byeongsin(丙申處分), the exile of a friend implicated in Mok Ho-ryong(睦虎龍)’s accusation case, and the removal of Song Si-yeol’s memorial tablet from Dobong-seowon(道峯書院). The poems written in these contexts reveal unreserved emotional intensity and adopt a vehement, impassioned tone. As a stalwart of the Noron faction, Jeong Ho endured a turbulent career marked by repeated dismissals, exiles, and reinstatements, which compelled him to confront the recurring dilemma of chulcheo(出處, engagement in and withdrawal from official office). Whenever he was about to leave or had already left the royal court, his longing for the monarch intensified, giving rise to an internal conflict over chulcheo. Conversely, while serving in close proximity to the monarch, he experienced the same dilemma amid royal distrust, the suspicion and hostility of political opponents, and psychological anxiety. Despite these internal and external conflicts, he took pride in maintaining his moral integrity, expressing it symbolically through the imagery of chrysanthemums, plum blossoms, and bamboo. At the same time, Jeong Ho demonstrated a sincere reflective consciousness in the sphere of everyday life, seeking to examine and discipline himself. Whereas poems related to political matters tend to express heightened emotions such as passionate indignation or deep sorrow, these works are characterized by calmer or occasionally humorous tones. He also frequently invoked figures from the Confucian classics, including Confucius and Song dynasty Neo-Confucian scholars, in order to articulate his aspirations and convictions. In this respect, the present study is meaningful in that it illuminates one aspect of the orientations of consciousness and their literary manifestations in the works of a Noron literatus who was deeply involved in politics amid the turbulent political climate of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries.

본고는 丈巖 鄭澔(1648-1736)의 한시를 통해 그의 내면의식을 살펴본 것이다. 정호는 鄭澈의 현손이자 宋時烈의 제자로서 정치적으로 노론 강경파에 속하는 인물이다. 정호는 당대 정치적 사건이나 의미로 읽힐 수 있는 사안이 있을 때마다 시를 지었다. 고조부 정철의 관작이 추탈될 때, 萬東廟 건립과 관련하여 비난 여론이 일었을 때, 丙申處分이 있을 때, 睦虎龍 고변 사건에 연루된 벗이 유배될 때, 송시열 위패가 도봉서원에서 출향될 때 등을 들 수 있는데, 이때 지은 작품들은 정치적 승패와 무관하게 激情的이고 강개한 어조를 띈다. 노론 강경파인 정호는 파면과 유배, 복직을 반복하면서 출처의 갈등을 자주 겪었다. 조정을 떠나거나 이미 떠난 상황에서는 戀君 의식이 강하게 일어나면서 출처에 관한 내적 갈등을 겪었고, 군왕과 가까이 있을 때는 군왕의 불신, 반대파의 의심과 배척, 심리적 불안 속에 출처의 갈등을 겪었다. 그러나 출처의 갈등을 겪는 중에도 그는 고결한 지조를 지니고 있다는 자부심을 국화, 매화, 대나무 등을 통해 드러내었다. 한편, 정호는 정치적 현실과 별개로 일상에서 진솔하게 자신을 성찰하고 경계하고자 하는 의식을 지니고 있었다. 정치적인 문제와 관련하여 지은 작품들은 감정이 고조된 상태에서 주로 격정이나 悲感을 드러내는 데 비해, 이런 작품은 차분한 어조나 해학적인 모습을 보인다. 또 공자와 송대 성리학자 등 유가 경전에 등장하는 인물들을 자주 인용하여 자신의 뜻을 표현하였다. 이상의 논의는 17세기 말~18세기 초 격동의 정치 환경 속에서 당쟁에 깊이 관여한 한 노론계 문사의 의식지향과 그 문학의 일단을 보여준다는 점에서 의미가 있다.
