A Proposal for a ‘Homiletical Bridge’ Model to Overcome the Gap between Interpretation and Application
This study addresses the persistent dichotomy between exegesis and application, a long-standing challenge in contemporary homiletics. It seeks to overcome this divide from a theological and linguistic-philosophical perspective by proposing a direction for expository preaching grounded in the "speech acts of the Holy Spirit." Existing proposition-centered preaching has severely weakened textuality by treating the Bible as a static repository of doctrinal propositions or information. Conversely, the New Homiletics, emerging as a reaction to such tendencies, has often leaned toward the existential experiences and emotional empathy of the audience, thereby marginalizing the sovereign intention embedded in the biblical text. In response, this study adopts the speech act theory of John L. Austin and John Searle to establish that the biblical text, beyond simple locution (the delivery of information), functions as an illocutionary act—an utterance that performs a specific divine action. Furthermore, this study argues that preaching must function as a "re-illocutionary act," through which the preacher reenacts and performs the biblical text’s illocutionary force for a contemporary audience. By integrating the Reformed theological perspective on the Word and the Spirit, this study systematizes a theory of preaching as "the speech act of the Holy Spirit," in which the Spirit preserves the illocutionary force of the written text and achieves perlocutionary effects through the preacher's proclamation, effectively bridging the gap between biblical interpretation and homiletical application.
