Imagining Well‑Being in an Age of Compound Disasters — Relational Existential Agency in the Japan Sinks Media Mix —
This study analyzes the half-century narrative transformation of the media mix Japan Sinks to reconceptualize ”well-being” in the age of compound disasters and proposes the analytical concept of ”Relational Existential Agency.” Since Komatsu Sakyō’s original novel (1973), Japan Sinks has projected each era’s anxieties and aspirations through the apocalyptic imagination of the Japanese archipelago’s sub- mersion. Theoretically, the study draws critically on Heidegger’s ontology (as interpreted by Richard Polt), Amartya Sen’s capability approach, and Martha Nussbaum’s the- ory of central human capabilities, while transcending the condition of institutional presence presupposed by existing theories. ”Existential Agency” is defined as a practical action theory in which subjects—amid conditions of lack and absence —actively construct the meaning of a dignified life and generate solidarity with others. Narrative analysis reveals that the 1973 original, while depicting the terror of ”refugees” facing national annihilation, anticipated a relational community through the concept of the subnation. The 2006 film disclosed the seeds of a ”happiness ethics” within its heroic sacrifice for national survival. The 2020 animated series embodies ”relational recovery” through the decentered agency and ethics of docu- mentation of the digital-native generation, while the 2021 drama demonstrates the evolution of existential agency by converting territorial loss into intellectual and ethical solidarity through technological sharing and transnational cooperation. The structural transformation across half a century suggests that disaster imag- ination functions not merely as future prediction, but as a practical space for col- lectively envisioning how human beings will inhabit an age of compound disas- ters. Furthermore, the concept of the ”non-territorial state” to which Japan Sinks ultimately arrives offers a humanistic reference point for discussions of future gov- ernance in East Asia, where the AI transition and climate crisis intersect.
