Postwar Okinawan literature has evoked memories of the Battle of Okinawa and raised questions about the reality of Okinawa—a place still caught in an on- going war, given the continued presence of U.S. military bases. Eiki Matayoshi (又吉栄喜, 1947–) is one such writer. His “original landscape”, the area within a two-kilometer radius that serves as the starting point for his literature, encom- passes not only Okinawa’s nature and traditional culture but also the social and historical realities linked to these questions. This paper analyzes Matayoshi’ s The Battle of Okinawa Fantasy Collection: The Kingdom of Dreams as a work that focuses on the ghosts of those who died in the war. Rather than depicting specific scenes of war, the stories in this collection in- troduce the deceased who died for unclear reasons into the lives of the survivors. In this novel, the reality of the living and the fantastical world inhabited by ghosts overlap. It not only reveals a critical awareness of the present where reality exists as a continuation of the battlefield, but also reminds us that, even as the war is regarded as a concluded event, memories of the war remain wandering“here and now ” like these lingering ghosts in stories. These stories raise questions about the complex intertwining of perpetration and victimization, discrimination and op- pression, while also critically examining the phenomenon whereby the memories of the dead are co-opted for the sake of communal healing or through discourses such as “war is cruel.” By exhibiting the dead and thereby challenging the very notion that “the war is over,” these works provide readers with an opportunity to listen to these scattered memories of death.
