Emotional Display Rules under Mask-Wearing Conditions : Focusing on Expression of Basic Emotions According to Communication Interactants
This study aimed to examine differences in Emotional Display Rules according to mask-wearing status in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. Specifically, it explored whether there are differences in the perceived Emotional Display Rules for basic emotions (happiness, anger, contempt, disgust, fear, sadness, and surprise) depending on mask-wearing (no mask vs. mask) when interacting with communication interactants of varying intimacy levels (strangers vs. close friends) in public places where individuals are conscious of others. Data were collected through an online survey, and a total of 350 responses were included in the final analysis. The main findings are as follows. First, respondents perceived greater control of emotional expression when interacting with strangers than with close friends. Second, the level of perceived control across individual emotions was highest in the order of contempt, disgust, fear, anger, sadness, surprise, and happiness. Third, mask-wearing itself did not yield a significant difference in the overall level of perceived emotion expression control; however, differences in perceived emotion expression control according to mask-wearing varied depending on both emotion type and communication interactant. In the no-mask condition, the perceived control of negative emotions (anger, contempt, disgust, and fear) was strengthened. In the mask-wearing condition, the perceived control of negative emotions toward close friends tended to decrease, whereas for strangers, the perceived control of contempt decreased while that of surprise increased. Fourth, gender differences were observed. In the no-mask condition, males showed higher control than females when expressing happiness, anger, and fear toward strangers, and tended to show greater control of happiness and fear toward close friends. In the mask-wearing condition, males exhibited higher control than females only in anger expression toward close friends. These results suggest that differences in emotion expression control emerge selectively in combination with the contextual condition of emotion type, rather than varying directly according to mask-wearing alone, and that the specific pattern further differs by communication interactant. These findings provide empirical evidence of differences in the perception of emotional display rules according to mask-wearing conditions in contexts where mask-wearing has become part of everyday life. Based on these results, theoretical, practical, and policy implications are discussed.
