The Influence of Three Missionaries on Ahn Chang-ho and Ilhan New, Pioneers of the Healthy City : A Shalom City Perspective
This study investigates the intellectual-historical foundations of Korea’s healthy-city and Shalom-city movement through the lives and ministries of three American missionaries—Horace G. Underwood, Frederick S. Miller, and Samuel A. Moffett—who influenced two Korean pioneers, Dosan Ahn Chang-ho (1878-1938) and Ilhan New (1895-1971). As its analytical framework, the study adopts the JKSH model (Jesus → Kingdom of God → Shalom City → Healthy City) that the author has consistently advanced. Its principal findings are threefold. First, the three missionaries were not mere evangelists but holistic ministers who integrated gospel, education, and medicine at a single site; because their work pursued the holistic restoration of an urban community across five dimensions—spiritual (靈), mental (魂), physical (體), social (社), and environmental (環)—it constitutes a Korean prototype of Shalom-city ministry. Second, however, the paths by which this influence reached the two pioneers differed. In Ahn’s case it was a direct-tutelage type (直接師 事型) of influence, received in his youth through the Gusehaktang (Salvation Academy) founded by Underwood and run by Miller. In New’s case it was a household-transmission type (家傳繼承型) of influence: the conversion of his father, Yu Ki-yeon, in Pyongyang—a conversion that took root in the ministerial soil cultivated by Moffett, then a central figure of Presbyterian work in the region—was handed down to the next generation. Third, Ahn sowed the seeds of a Korean Shalom city through the Jeomjin School and the Ideal Village movement, while New did so through Yuhan Corporation and his vision of a healthy citizenry, each in his own way. In conclusion, by demonstrating that Korea’s healthy-city and Shalom-city movement took shape within a single generation through two mechanisms of intellectual transmission—direct and household—this study seeks to provide a historical foundation for the contemporary Korean church’s Jesus-Shalom movement and for discourse on the healthy city and the healthy nation.
