The purpose of this study is to reexamine the homiletical theology of Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892), famously known as the ‘Prince of Preachers’ and to investigate how his all-encompassing application and exceptional delivery have decisively influenced the contemporary revival of Calvinistic preaching. While extensive research has been conducted on the life, general theology, and delivery of Charles H. Spurgeon, scholarly investigations into his homiletical theology, specific methods of application, and his subsequent influence on contemporary Reformed preachers remain relatively scarce. Consequently, this paper deliberately avoids a general biographical or theological argument. Instead, it focuses on Spurgeon’s distinct homiletical theology and the characteristics of his application as a Calvinistic preacher, ultimately seeking to present practical implications for contemporary Calvinistic ministers. The main body of the research analyzes the primary characteristics of Spurgeon’s preaching theology across five key dimensions: his view of Scripture, the Puritan experiential structure, Christ-centeredness, the doctrines of grace and the covenant of redemption, and the use of vernacular language and metaphors. In particular, the study provides an in-depth examination of Spurgeon’s ‘all-encompassing application,’ which remains a significant challenge for contemporary Calvinistic preachers. Furthermore, this study discusses the communicative excellence Spurgeon employed to deliver these theological applications. His preaching sought to transform both the audience and society through a strategic balance between thorough preparation and spontaneity, a soulwinning passion that demanded holistic commitment and change, and an absolute reliance on the Holy Spirit. In conclusion, by demonstrating how Spurgeon’s homiletical legacy has been inherited by prominent contemporary Calvinistic preachers to shape their homiletical identities, this paper proposes a practical and revitalizing direction for modern Reformed preaching.

본 연구의 목적은 19세기‘설교의 황태자’로 불리는 찰스 해돈 스펄전(Charles Haddon Spurgeon, 1834-1892)의 설교 신학을 재조명하고, 그의 전방위적 적용과 탁월한 전달 방식이 현대 칼빈주의 설교 부흥에 미친 결정적 영향을 고찰함으로써 오늘날 설교자들에게 설교학적 함의를 제시하는 데 있다. 기존 연구들이 주로 스펄전의 생애와 신학, 전달방식에 집중했지만, 설교 신학과 적용, 그리고 현대 개혁주의 설교자들에게 끼친 영향에 관한 연구는 상대적으로 부족한 실정이다. 이에 본 논문은 스펄전의 생애나 일반 신학 서술을 지양하고, 칼빈주의 설교자로서 그의 설교 신학과 적용적 특성에 초점을 맞추어 현대 칼빈주의 설교자들에게 주는 함의를 도출하고자 한다. 연구 본론에서는 스펄전 설교 신학의 주요 특징을 다섯 가지 영역, 즉 성경관, 청교도적 경험주의 구조, 그리스도 중심성, 은혜의 교리 및 구속 언약, 그리고 일상 언어와 은유를 중심으로 분석한다. 특히 현대 칼빈주의 설교자들에게 가장 큰 도전으로 작용하는 스펄전의‘전방위적 적용(all-encompassing application)’특성을 심도 있게 고찰한다. 스펄전의 설교는 성령 충만한 설교자의 철저한 준비와 즉흥 설교의 균형, 영혼을 향한 구령의 열정, 청중의 전인격적 결단과 변화를 촉구하는 점, 그리고 전적으로 성령에 의지하는 태도를 통해 청중과 사회의 변화를 도모하고자 하였다. 결론적으로, 스펄전의 설교 유산이 현대 주요 칼빈주의 설교자들게 어떻게 계승되어 설교학적 정체성 형성에 기여하였는지를 고찰함으로써, 현대 개혁주의 설교가 나아가야 할 실천적 방향성을 제시하고자 한다.
