This study critically examines existing discussions of forgiveness through the narrative of the woman caught in adultery (John 8:1-11) and reconstructs a pastoral-theological understanding of forgiveness. Previous studies have primarily approached forgiveness from the perspective of pastoral counseling, emphasizing emotional healing, psychological recovery, and the protection of victims. While these contributions are valuable, they tend to reduce forgiveness to a therapeutic process. This study argues that forgiveness should instead be understood as God’s saving act proclaimed in the gospel. Through an exegetical reading of John 8:1-11, it demonstrates that forgiveness is (1) a gospel proclamation to sinners, (2) an act of grace grounded in the restoration of the relationship with God, (3) a prevenient act of grace that enables repentance, and (4) an ecclesiological event that transforms a community of condemnation into a community of grace. Furthermore, the study critiques coerced forgiveness and proposes a pastoraltheological framework that integrates justice, church discipline, healing, and communal responsibility.

본 논문은 요한복음 8:1-11에 나타난 간음한 여인 사건을 중심으로 기존의 용서 담론을 비판적으로 검토하고, 용서 이해를 목회신학적 관 점에서 재구성하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 기존 연구들은 용서를 주로 상처 치유, 심리적 회복, 피해자 보호 등 목회상담적 관점에서 이해해 왔다. 이러한 접근은 중요한 목회적 통찰을 제공하지만, 용서를 인간의 치유 경험으로 축소할 위험도 지닌다. 이에 본 논문은 용서를 하나님의 구원 행위와 복음 선포의 관점에서 재조명한다. 요한복음 8:1-11에 대한 주해를 바탕으로, 용서는 첫째, 죄인을 향한 복음적 선언이며, 둘째, 하나님과의 관계 회복에서 출발하는 은혜의 사건이고, 셋째, 회개를 가능하게 하는 선행적 은혜이며, 넷째, 정죄 공동체를 은혜 공동체로 재구성하는 교회론적 사건임을 논증한다. 아울러 강요된 용서의 위험성을 비판하고, 정의와 권징, 치유와 공동체적 책임을 함께 고려하는 목회신학적 접근을 제안한다.
