This study begins from the premise that debates on the Anthropocene should move beyond questions of nuclear evidence and stratigraphic standards. Rather, they should become a process of reflecting on contemporary forms of life shaped by the nuclear age across multiple scales, including people, the planet, states, regions, bodies, and materials. To this end, this article examines how the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and the Fukushima nuclear power plant accident, which are events often treated in Japan as separate legacies, are brought into relation through the circulation of seeds from hibaku jumoku (atomic-bombed trees) and the movement of hibaku nisei jumoku (second-generation atomic-bombed trees). The article further considers how these movements illuminate an ethical demand to remember and reflect on the twentieth-century history of nuclear violence. The hibaku jumoku preservation project that began in Hiroshima, along with subsequent practices of sharing seeds and saplings across different places, not only sustains the memory of nuclear history but also functions as a medium of invocation. It calls forth places and people repeatedly othered in modern and contemporary history, as well as forms of life beyond the human. In doing so, these trees compel us to confront the histories destroyed by the very scientific and technological achievements and ideals of progress often associated with the Anthropocene. They also suggest that peace is made possible not merely through the absence of war, but through practices of mutual care among humans and more-than-human beings.
