In this paper, I examine the fact that subculture games produced and released in South Korea around 2020—more specifically, games based on the style of Japanese otaku content aimed at men, in which players collect characters and increase their intimacy levels—have emerged as a new trend in the South Korean gaming market. I analyze the process by which these games were produced and gained popularity through the history of Korea’s reception and indigenization of Japanese otaku content since the 1990s. The fictional image of “Japan,” represented by the styles of Japanese manga, anime, and games commonly found in these games, has emerged as a form of K-Japonism after the mid-2010s. First, the term “subculture games” originates from Hiroki Azuma’s concept of “subkarucha” and targets fandom, particularly young male fans, who are passionate about Japanese otaku-related content that was excluded during the process of the indigenous “odeokku” concept becoming mainstream and popular. Their popularity stems from a structure in which Korea’s early otaku, who had been enthusiasts of Japanese single-player dating simulation games since the 1990s, began producing games around the 2020s, universalizing their tastes as “moe,” and were supported by a young male fan base that had been familiar with such content since childhood following the opening of Japanese popular culture. Although they belong to different generations, they all perceive Japan as a “space of freedom” where their preferences are acknowledged and respected; this influences not only the freedom in game-based fan creations but also the way a virtual Japan is depicted within the games themselves. At the same time, these games depict “Beautiful Fighting Girls,” a fusion of girls and military themes. While this concept evolved from Japanese otaku culture, in Korean subculture games, it is overlaid with the military experiences shared by young Korean men and the context of modern Korean history, thereby enhancing a sense of realism and persuasiveness that cannot be achieved in similar Japanese games. From this perspective, the history of the reception of Japanese otaku culture in Korea and the recent popularity of subculture games cannot be separated. The “K-Japonism” expressed in Korean subculture games can be regarded as a new sociocultural product created by the fandom of Japanese otaku culture, which has persistently existed within Korea in response to the globalization of Japanese otaku culture, and thus as one that is distinct from the category of “odeokku” in mainstream Korean society.
