This study aims to analyze the imagery of death presented in Ugyejip, a collection of writings by Seong Hon(Ugye). He expressed the Way (Dao) of Neo-Confucianism and the wisdom of life through various images of death. His reflections on death, as revealed in Ugyejip, demonstrate a perspective shaped by the practices of self-cultivation (wigijihak) and reverent attentiveness and principled inquiry (geogyeong gungni), presenting death as viewed from the standpoint of a moral exemplar (junzi) and as a path toward moral completion. These insights were formed through his deep engagement with both nature and the contemplation of death. The imagery of death in Ugye’s thought can be categorized into two types: “feigned death” and “death integrated with life.” In the notion of feigned death, he sought to transcend the secular world through self-reflection and humility, while engaging in introspection amid illness and suffering. In contrast, death integrated with life reflects an understanding of death not merely as an object of mourning, but as a continuous process connected to life itself. For Ugye, death functioned as a crucial moment for achieving moral life and realizing one’s higher aspirations. While respecting the life of the Confucian scholar and the ideal of the junzi in the Joseon period, Ugye developed a distinctive perspective by seeking practical wisdom about death within the realities of life. His scholarship originated in the familial sphere, and his innate disposition was closely aligned with the Way. His writings on death were often occasioned by the deaths of friends and acquaintances. With a deep sense of loyalty to the ruler and concern for the state, he attained profound insights into life grounded in Neo-Confucian thought and put them into practice. Mourning the deaths of his friends, Ugye reflected simultaneously on life, politics, and philosophy, expressing grief within a Confucian framework of loyalty and a nature-oriented worldview. He deeply understood the wisdom gained through governing others (chiin) and applied it to everyday life, pursuing a practical and effective way of living. By integrating Neo-Confucian thought with practice, he recorded his unique mode of life in Ugyejip, intending to transmit his lived philosophy and the practice of self-cultivation to future generations. Ultimately, he regarded contemplation of nature and death as opportunities for realizing moral perfection.
