Ugye(牛溪) was a scholar who devoted his life to the practice of learning rather than wealth. I admired the academic life of my old teacher and worked hard on studying the principles of life and learning. His humble mind showed in the poem a posture that never stopped trying. Focusing on the practical application of a scholar, he expressed in his poetry that scholarship is a task that must be pursued continuously. He reverently observed his own actions as a method of deep introspection. Rather than the bustling city of Seoul, he devoted his entire life to scholarship and taught his disciples in the quiet countryside to maintain the life of a humble scholar. This aspect of his life is captured in his poetry. Therefore, his poems reveal the image of a scholar striving for learning and practice every day. Whenever he experienced a personal enlightenment, which is possible only with a sincere heart, he expressed his emotions in his poetry. His emotions manifested as joy and sorrow; joy was expressed when he experienced enlightenment, while sorrow was expressed alongside a sense of shame, which stemmed from his humility. He was a sincere scholar who neither put himself forward nor was arrogant toward others. He believed that the reason the purity of nature aligns with the human heart is the existence of enlightenment. Because he aspired to be a truly good person, he devoted himself to doing good deeds. His kind heart and actions became a role model for others, and he taught his disciples to always act as upright people. This life and education served as the foundation for him becoming a historically great figure and for creating meaningful poetry.

우계는 부귀영화보다는 성학(聖學)의 실천에 전념하였던 학자였다. 옛 성현(聖賢)의 학자적 삶을 흠모하여 이치를 궁구하는 공부에 힘썼으나 그러한 노력에도 불구하고 성취하지 못했다고 언급한 것은 겸손한 학자의 내면이 반영된 것이다. 우계의 학문은 일생토록 지속적으로 행해야 하는 인격 수양의 한 방법이므로 위기지학(爲己之學)이다. 우계는 스스로 힘써 몸을 감추고 학문을 하는 데에 진력하며 살았는데, 날마다 실천에 힘써 조그만 허물이라도 생기면 뉘우쳐서 고치겠다는 의지가 매우 결연한 학자였다. 이러한 마음을 담은 그의 시에는 무실(務實)의 의지가 잘 나타나 있다. 우계는 벼슬을 하지 않아 곤궁하게 살아가면서도 학문에 대한 열정으로 일관된 삶을 살았던 서산의 학문 정신을 추숭하였다. 참마음에 기반한 자득(自得)을 체험했을 당시에 우러난 정감은 희열로 표출되며, 학자라고 내세울 것이 없는 부끄러운 학문임을 토로할 당시에 우러난 정감은 비감으로 표출된다. 전원에 은거하는 까닭은 마음의 수양을 통한 자득(自得)을 위함이므로 그의 학문은 위기지학(爲己之學)이 핵심이다. 속인과는 마음이 합치하지 않으나, 산중의 자연물들로 인해 인간과 자연의 이치를 자득(自得)하게 됨을 고백하고 있다. 거백옥(蘧伯玉)의 고사를 전고 삼아 49년 세월을 살아온 공로를 앞세우지 않았을뿐더러 부끄러움의 미감을 표출하고 있다는 점이 특징적이다. 우계는 스스로 명예를 좋아하는 습관을 끊어 버리고 살았음을 언급한 바 있는데, 이는 그가 청렴한 선비라는 사실을 입증한 것이다. 학문적 성취가 달관(達觀)의 시경(詩境)과 맞물려 있는 연유도 이러한 사실과 무관하지 않다. 우계의 즐거움은 부귀영화에 골몰하는 속인의 지향과 정반대인 욕심 없는 학자의 마음에서 비롯된 것이다. 우계는 군자의 일상이 소인과 다름을 읊었는데, 군자의 일거일동(一擧一動)은 전전긍긍하는 것임을 보여주었다.
