The “Jumunjigyeol”(朱門旨訣, Essentials of the Neo-Confucian School of Zhu Xi) compiled by Ugye(牛溪) Seong Hon(成渾, 1535~1598) is a kind of anthology of Zhu Xi’s books and educational textbook in which he selected only the books on the method of learning from them and presented them to his students under the title “Weihakjibang”(爲學之方). At the time of compiling this book, Seong Hon not only had an understanding of Zhu Xi’s teachings, but he also had a certain scholarly status, such as being recommended as a scholar and being appointed to government posts one after another. He was also solidifying his academic position through his association with major scholars of the time, including Yi Hwang(李滉). Accordingly, many literati entered his school, and as he began to lecture to them in earnest, Seong Hon established the academic rules called Seosilui(書室儀) and summarized the essentials of study methods from “Zhu Xi Dazhuan”(朱子大全, The Complete Works of Zhu Xi) and utilized them in his lectures to teach based on Zhu Xi’s teachings. The “Jumonjikyeol” was compiled as a textbook for lectures, but it can be said to be a core work containing the essence of Seong Hon’s study theory(工夫論). It contains the essentials of Wihak(爲學) based on Zhu Xi’s philosophy selected from Seong Hon’s perspective, and in particular, it was consistently evaluated as a core textbook for lectures not only in Seong Hon's time but also afterward, and had a certain influence. In this respect, the “Jumonjikyeol” can be said to be one of the representative works that can confirm Seong Hon’s academic position. A considerable amount of research has been conducted on the “Jumonjikyeol”. However, relatively little concrete examination has been made of the compilation background of the “Jumonjikyeol”, its publication and distribution, and its patterns of inheritance. Paying attention to these limitations of previous studies, I will first examine the compilation background of the “Jumonjikyeol” in the flow of intellectual history, and then attempt to identify the characteristics of the “Jumonjikyeol” in relation to the compilation of Zhu Xi’s selected works published in the 16th century. In addition, I intend to specifically check the sources of the writings included in the “Jumonjikyeol” in relation to Seong Hon’s lecturing activities, and examine the outline of its contents. Based on this review, I specifically confirmed the influence of the “Jumonjikyeol” by confirming the publication, distribution, acceptance, and succession patterns of the “Jumonjikyeol” not only during Seong Hon’s time but also after his death. Through this review, I suggested that the status and influence of the “Jumonjikyeol” are comparable to Yi I’s Gyeokmongyogeol(擊蒙要訣), which is generally regarded as important in academia.

우계(牛溪) 성혼(成渾, 1535~1598)이 초록(抄錄)하여 편찬한 『주문지결(朱門旨訣)』은 주자서(朱子書) 가운데 학문하는 방법에 관한 것만을 선별하여 『위학지방(爲學之方)』이라는 제목을 붙여 그의 문인에게 제시한 일종의 주자서 선집(選集)이자 교육용 교재이다. 이 책을 편찬하던 시기에 성혼은 주자학에 대해 이해를 갖추고 있었을 뿐만 아니라 유일(遺逸)로 천거되어 연이어 관직을 제수받는 등 일정하게 학자적 위상을 갖추고 있었고, 이황(李滉)을 비롯한 당대 주요 학자들과의 교유를 통해 학문적 입지를 구체화하고 있었다. 이에 따라 그의 문하에는 다수의 문인이 입문하였고, 이들을 대상으로 강학 활동을 본격화하면서 성혼은 학규(學規)인 ｢서실의(書室儀)｣의 제정과 함께 주자학에 기반한 강학을 위해 『주자대전(朱子大全)』 등에서 학문하는 방법의 요체를 초록하여 강학에 활용하였다. 이렇듯 『주문지결』은 강학을 위한 교재로 편찬된 것이지만, 성혼의 공부론(工夫論) 요체가 담긴 핵심적인 저작이라 할 수 있다. 성혼의 입장에서 선별한 주자학에 기초한 위학(爲學)의 요체를 담고 있고, 특히 성혼이 활동하던 당대뿐만 아니라 이후에도 지속해서 강학의 핵심 교재로 평가받으며 일정하게 영향을 끼쳤다. 이러한 점에서 『주문지결』은 성혼의 학문적 입장을 확인할 수 있는 대표 저작 중 하나라 할 수 있다. 『주문지결』에 대해서는 그간 적지 않은 연구가 진행되었다. 하지만 상대적으로 『주문지결』의 편찬 배경, 『주문지결』의 간행 및 유통, 계승 양상 등에 대해서는 구체적인 검토가 이루어지지 않았다고 할 수 있다. 이러한 선행 연구의 제한점에 유의하여 본고에서는 먼저 사상사적인 흐름에서 『주문지결』의 편찬 배경을 검토하고, 16세기에 간행된 주자서 선집 편찬과 관련하여 『주문지결󰡕의 특징을 확인하고자 하였다. 그리고 성혼의 강학 활동과 관련하여 『주문지결』에 수록된 글들의 출처 등을 구체적으로 확인하여 그 내용의 대체를 검토하고자 하였다. 이러한 검토를 바탕으로 성혼 당대뿐만 아니라 사후에 펼쳐진 『주문지결』의 간행과 유통, 그리고 수용과 계승 양상 등을 확인하여 『주문지결』의 영향을 구체적으로 확인하였다. 이러한 검토를 통해 논자는 『주문지결』의 위상과 영향이 학계에서 일반적으로 중요시하고 있는 이이(李珥)의 『격몽요결(擊蒙要訣)』에 비견됨을 제시하였다.
