This study applied the war-process theory proposed by Professor Stuart A. Bremer of the State University of New York in the United States and analyzed the root causes of the Russia-Ukraine war in 2022, as well as the development process leading to the war, through literature research methods. As a result of analysis based on the theory of the war process, it was confirmed that the war was the result of a complex interaction of multidimensional factors. In particular, Ukraine has actively promoted a pro-Western policy since 2014 for the survival of the country. Accordingly, Western countries, including the United States, emphasized the importance of protecting Ukraine's sovereignty and democracy and raised the need for active support. On the other hand, Russia argued that it was fighting a war for the existence of the state in response to Western forces seeking to threaten East Slavic civilization and isolate the country. Eventually, the confrontation intensified in a situation where various complex problems were difficult to solve, which turned into a war initiated by President Putin, and the war continues to this day.

본 연구는 미국 뉴욕주립대학교 스튜어트 A. 브레머 교수팀이 제시한 전쟁과정 이론을 적용하여, 2022년 러시아-우크라이나 전쟁의 근본 원인과 전쟁으로의 발전과정을 문헌조사방법을 통해 분석하였다. 전쟁과정 이론에 근거한 분석 결과, 해당 전쟁은 다차원적 요인들이 복합적으로 상호작용한 결과임이 확인되었다. 특히 우크라이나는 국가 생존을 위해 2014년 이후 친서방 정책을 보다 적극적으로 추진하였다. 이에 미국을 비롯한 서방 국가들은 우크라이나의 주권과 민주주의 수호의 중요성을 강조하며 적극적인 지원의 필요성을 제기하였다. 반면, 러시아는 동슬라브 문명권에 대한 위협과 자국의 고립을 초래하려는 서방 세력에 대응하여 국가 존립을 위한 전쟁을 수행하고 있다고 주장하였다. 결국 다양하고 복합적인 문제들이 해결되기 어려운 상황에서 대립이 심화되었고, 이는 푸틴 대통령에 의해 전쟁으로 비화되었으며 현재까지 전쟁이 지속되고 있다.
