The purpose of this study is to examine the causes of the Israel-Hamas war, focusing on Kenneth Waltz's "Three Images" theory, and to provide implications for military preparedness on the Korean Peninsula. The Israel-Hamas war, initiated by Hamas's surprise attack on October 7, 2023, is not merely a conventional military conflict; it is a complex phenomenon characterized by a combination of hybrid, asymmetric, informational, and cyber warfare elements. Consequently, single-dimensional analyses are insufficient to fully explain the causes of this war. Therefore, this study analyzes how the three images of war proposed by Kenneth Waltz—the individual, the state, and the international system— interacted to lead to this conflict. The findings confirm that these three factors operated in a complex interplay; notably, the study identifies that structural pressures within the international system induced a "self-help" strategy by a non-state actor. This research holds academic significance by applying structural realism to a non-state actor, thereby extending the theoretical scope of the theory.

2023년 10월 7일 하마스의 기습공격으로 시작된 이스라엘-하마스 전쟁은 단순한 군사적 무력 충돌을 넘어 하이브리드 전쟁, 비대칭 전쟁, 그리고 정보ㆍ사이버 전쟁 요소가 결합된 복합적인 전쟁 양상을 보이고 있어, 단일 차원의 분석으로는 그 원인을 규명하는 데 한계가 있다. 본 연구의 목적은 케네스 월츠의 이미지 이론을 중심으로 이스라엘-하마스 전쟁 원인을 고찰하고, 이를 통해 한반도의 군사적 대비 과제에 대한 시사점을 제시하는 데 있다. 이에 본 연구는 월츠가 제시한 전쟁 원인에 관한 세 가지 이미지(인간, 국가, 국제체제) 이론이 어떻게 상호작용하여 전쟁을 유도했는지 분석하였다. 연구 결과는 인간·국가·국제체제라는 세 가지 요인이 복합적으로 작용함이 확인되었으며, 특히 국제체제의 구조적 압력이 비국가 행위자의 자조(self-help) 전략을 유도함을 규명하였다. 이는 구조적 현실주의 이론을 비국가 행위자에게 적용하여 이론적 외연을 확장했다는 점에서 학술적 의의를 갖는다.
