The purpose of this study was to develop a Basic Vocal Training Course applying Problem-Based Learning (PBL) and to analyze its educational outcomes through implementation in a university setting, thereby proposing a teaching and learning model applicable to higher education in vocal training. As higher education in music increasingly emphasizes learner-centered instruction that promotes self-directed learning and problem-solving abilities beyond the acquisition of technical skills, this study reviewed previous research on vocal education and Problem-Based Learning and developed a course reflecting the integrated educational environment of the Department of Applied Music Arts. The developed course was implemented during the first semester of the 2026 academic year with 20 undergraduate students at S University. Data were collected and analyzed from project outcomes, activity reports, team meeting records, instructor observation notes, before-and-after performance videos, and student satisfaction surveys. The findings indicated that students improved their understanding of vocal principles and structures, developed the ability to identify and analyze their own vocal problems, and established appropriate problem-solving strategies. Furthermore, project-based collaborative learning enhanced students’ self-directed learning, problem-solving skills, and collaborative competencies. The staged instructional design, which combined theoretical instruction with project-based learning, demonstrated the potential to effectively integrate theory and practice in vocal education. In addition, the implementation of an online learning management and assessment system enabled systematic documentation of learning processes and assessment data while facilitating continuous instructor feedback. This study is significant in that it presents a practical case of developing and implementing a Basic Vocal Training Course applying Problem-Based Learning. The findings are expected to provide useful implications for improving teaching and learning methods in higher music education and for developing curricula for various performance-based music courses. However, this study is limited by its single-university, one-semester case study design, which restricts generalizability and the assessment of long-term effects.
