A Study on the Bodily Inscription of Emotion and Morphological Transformation - From the Perspective of Body Memory -
This study examines the bodily inscription of emotion and morphological transformation from the perspective of body memory, with the aim of clarifying the overall conceptual relationship between emotional experience and bodily inscription. The relationship between the actor’s body and emotion has historically been a central issue in acting theory. In contemporary discourse, emotion is increasingly understood not merely as an abstract psychological phenomenon, but as an integrated process involving bodily sensation, perception, memory, and cognition. From this perspective, this study explores the relationships among emotional perception and integration, body memory, bodily tendencies, and morphological transformation. To this end, an integrative literature review was conducted by analyzing and interrelating major theoretical perspectives, including those of James-Lange, Fuchs, Keleman, and others. The study focuses particularly on pre-reflective emotional experience that is received by the body prior to explicit judgment. Emotion is formed through the perception of stimuli, the integration of interoceptive signals, and the interaction of memory and context. In this process, the subject senses bodily changes and reaches an emotional state through bodily expression. Repeated emotional experiences accumulate at the levels of implicit memory and body memory. Rather than being stored solely as abstract or conceptual information, such experiences remain in the body as habits, attitudes, and bodily patterns, unconsciously influencing subsequent responses and behavioral choices. From this perspective, emotion forms a structured bodily order that can be reactivated and reorganized in the here and now through perception and cognition. The bodily inscription of emotion therefore functions as an underlying basis for bodily tendencies and morphological transformation and provides a theoretical foundation for understanding the actor’s process of role creation. This study is significant in conceptualizing the interconnected process from pre-reflective emotional experience through implicit memory and body memory to embodiment. However, as the study is limited to theoretical and conceptual analysis, further research is required to examine its application to actors’ role creation and specific creative works. Such research may extend the present discussion toward more practical applications in professional acting practice and university-level acting education.
