This study aims to explore the process of artistic aging among older television actors and to examine the meaning of the Symbolic Prison formed throughout their life experiences. Previous studies on aging have primarily focused on Successful Aging and Creative Aging, but they have been limited in explaining the later lives of professional artists whose identities have been shaped through lifelong artistic labor. To address this gap, the present study proposes Artistic Aging as a new analytical perspective for understanding the aging experiences of older television actors. The study employed a qualitative life-history approach based on in-depth interviews with nine male television actors aged 70 and older who had continued artistic activities until recent years. The findings revealed that although all participants maintained a strong professional identity as actors, they followed different trajectories of artistic aging. Some participants actively reconstructed the meaning of later life by expanding their artistic practices through directing, teaching, and community-based cultural activities. Others, however, experienced limitations in sustaining artistic practice because of ageism, economic insecurity, institutional exclusion, and negative social perceptions. Based on these findings, this study conceptualizes the Symbolic Prison as an internalized psychological and social structure shaped by long-term artistic labor and structural changes in the broadcasting industry. Rather than functioning as a fixed barrier, the Symbolic Prison operates as a dynamic process that may either be overcome or reinforced depending on how individuals recognize and respond to it. Accordingly, Artistic Aging is understood not merely as the continuation of artistic activities but as an ongoing process of reconstructing artistic identity, creative practice, and the meaning of life in later adulthood. This study extends existing discussions on Successful Aging and Creative Aging by proposing Artistic Aging and the Symbolic Prison as new analytical concepts. It also provides theoretical and practical implications for supporting sustainable artistic practice and cultural policy for older professional artists.

본 연구는 고령 방송연기자의 생애사적 경험을 바탕으로 노년기 예술활동의 지속 과정과 그 과정에서 형성되는 ‘상징적 감옥(Symbolic Prison)’의 의미를 탐색하는 데 목적이 있다. 기존의 노년 연구는 성공적 노화와 창의적 노화를 중심으로 이루어져 왔으나, 예술노동을 평생 수행해 온 전문 예술인의 노년기 삶과 예술적 실천을 충분히 설명하는 데에는 한계가 있다. 이에 본 연구는 고령 방송연기자의 예술적 노화를 새로운 분석 관점에서 조명하고자 하였다. 연구는 최근까지 방송 및 공연 활동을 이어온 70세 이상 남성 방송연기자 9명을 대상으로 심층면접을 실시하였으며, 생애사 연구방법을 적용하여 자료를 분석하였다. 연구결과, 참여자들은 모두 배우라는 직업적 정체성을 유지하고 있었으나 예술적 노화의 실천 양상은 서로 다른 경로를 보였다. 일부는 연출, 교육, 지역사회 문화활동 등 새로운 예술실천을 통해 예술가로서의 정체성과 삶의 의미를 지속적으로 재구성하였으며, 다른 일부는 연령주의, 경제적 취약성, 사회적 시선, 제도적 배제 등으로 인해 예술활동이 제한되는 양상을 보였다. 이러한 차이를 분석한 결과, 방송산업의 구조적 변화와 장기간 축적된 생애 경험이 내면화된 심리·사회적 제약으로 작용하는‘상징적 감옥’을 핵심 개념으로 도출하였다. 상징적 감옥은 예술적 노화를 일률적으로 결정하는 고정된 구조가 아니라 개인의 인식과 대응 방식에 따라 극복되거나 지속될 수 있는 역동적 과정으로 이해되었다. 본 연구는 예술적 노화를 고령 예술인의 지속적인 예술실천 과정으로 개념화하고, 상징적 감옥이라는 새로운 해석 틀을 제시함으로써 기존 의 성공적 노화와 창의적 노화 연구를 확장하였다는 점에서 학술적 의의를 가진다. 또한 고령 예술인의 지속가능한 예술활동을 위한 문화예술정책과 예술노동 지원 방안을 모색하는 데 기초자료를 제공한다.
