A Study on the Acting Techniques of Commedia dell'arte - Focusing on Corporeality -
This study was conducted to restore the actor’s body—which has long been marginalized as a secondary tool under the dominant paradigm centered on dramatic texts—to an autonomous aesthetic domain, and to re-examine Commedia dell’Arte as an “actor-centered theater.” Moving beyond the limitations of previous studies that were confined to historical backgrounds, character typologies, or genealogical approaches, this study distinguishes itself by illuminating the aesthetic horizon of “corporeality,” focusing on the existential presence of actors manifested in theatrical time and space and their dynamic communion with the audience. Specifically, by analyzing the mechanism of “bodily sharing” occurring within the co-presence of actor and audience, this paper seeks to academically validate the autonomous performativity of the body—once subordinate to text—and the value of direct, sensory communication. Methodologically, this study combines historical literature research on the stage performance of 16th–18th century Commedia dell’Arte with the aesthetic methodology of performativity developed by Erika Fischer-Lichte and others. In particular, based on Commedia dell’Arte’s “ambivalent popularity,” the acting mechanism uniting the bodies of actors and audiences was analyzed and verified across three levels: first, typology and direct/sensory transfer experience; second, improvisation and intersubjective dynamics; and third, material energy and bodily synchronization manifested at the peak of virtuosity. However, relying on limited historical records posed inherent limitations in fully reconstructing the raw liveness of the stage at the time, and the discussion could not be expanded to trace contemporary practical aspects of corporeality or conduct empirical measurements of audience transfer experiences. Nevertheless, the “mechanism of corporeality” in Commedia dell’Arte established in this study provides a valuable methodological foundation for investigating the direct and sensory performativity of actors and audiences co-present in the “here and now,” departing from the authority of dramatic texts. Furthermore, it is hoped that in-depth follow-up studies will continue to trace how the characteristics of corporeality derived in this paper are inherited and developed on contemporary stages.
