This study examines the theoretical coherence of the Neo-Kohlbergian concept of moral schema. Although Neo-Kohlbergians replaced Kohlberg's stages with schemas, they retained a developmental hierarchy extending from lower to higher schemas. The concept therefore combines two claims of different kinds: a descriptive claim concerning how readily a schema becomes accessible and a normative claim that higher schemas are morally better. The examination shows that moral schemas can be regarded as schemas, though only incompletely, whereas their hierarchical development remains unresolved. Schema accessibility does not itself yield a normative ranking, and its relation to the Kohlbergian developmental hierarchy has not been sufficiently explained. Accordingly, this study calls for further theoretical clarification despite the concept’s empirical usefulness and proposes that moral education shift its emphasis from schema possession to the contextual coordination of moral resources.

본 연구는 신콜버그 학파(Neo-Kohlbergian)의 도덕 스키마 개념이 정합적인가를 검토한다. 이들은 콜버그의 단계를 스키마로 대체하면서도 낮은 스키마에서 높은 스키마로 이어지는 발달 위계는 유지했는데, 이때 스키마는 성격이 다른 두 주장을 함께 끌어온다. 하나는 어떤 스키마가 얼마나 쉽게 활성화되는가에 관한 기술적 주장이고, 다른 하나는 높은 스키마일수록 더 낫다는 규범적 주장이다. 검토 결과 도덕 스키마가 스키마인지에 관한 의문은 불완전하게나마 해소되나, 위계적으로 발달한다는 규정에 관한 의문은 해소되지 않는다. 결국 사회인지의 접근 가능성과 콜버그의 발달 위계는 그 관계가 충분히 해명되지 않은 채 결합되어 있다. 이에 본 연구는 도덕 스키마의 경험적 유용성과 별개로 추가 해명의 필요성을 역설하며, 도덕교육의 주안점이 스키마의 보유에서 조율 능력으로 옮겨 가야 함을 제안한다.
