This article offers a prolegomenon to the theological interpretation of the Great Epic of the Chosen Han People (한민족선민대서사시, Hanminjok Seonmin Daeseoasi), examining its meaning and status within True Parents Theology. Since its formal emergence at the Entrance Ceremony of Cheon Won Gung Cheonil Sanctum — a pivotal threshold marking the era of Cheon Il Guk settlement — this grand narrative has come to function as a primary theological resource organizing ritual, worship, education, exhibition, and performance across the community. Yet the conceptual frameworks needed to interpret it theologically remain insufficiently developed in existing scholarship. To address this, the article first examines the conceptual distinctions between myth, history, and epic. By reflecting on the tension between the modern historicist dismissal of myth as fiction and the phenomenology of religion's recognition of myth as sacred symbolic narrative, and by attending to the hermeneutical presuppositions latent in empiricist historiography, the study identifies the epic as a third narrative mode — one that both incorporates and transcends these two categories. Drawing upon Frank M. Cross's theory of the Hebrew epic, Paul Ricoeur's concept of narrative identity, and Stanley Hauerwas's narrative ethics as theoretical frameworks, the theological functions of the epic are organized into four dimensions: the arrangement of communal memory within a salvific-historical structure, the formation of communal identity, the conferral of sacred mission, and the cultivation of an ethical community. On this theoretical foundation, the Great Epic of the Chosen Han People is interpreted as a theological epic that re-configures the originary narratives and historical memory of the Han people within the providential framework of the Heavenly Parent's history of salvation, thereby shaping the Cheon Il Guk community's self-understanding, sense of mission, and practical commitment. The article further argues that within True Parents Theology, the symbols and images of the Cheon Il Guk era undergo a significant functional transformation: from typological prefigurations harboring concealed providential meaning to creative and formative images through which the community sees, remembers, and inhabits the truth already made manifest through the True Parents. Through this analysis, the article demonstrates that the Great Epic of the Chosen Han People is neither a regression to myth nor a distortion of history, but a theological great epic for the era of Cheon Il Guk settlement — a narrative form that connects doctrine to living memory, and living memory to communal mission.
